Yesterday, we reported the completed and stuck-in-David-Bergstein-hell film “Love Ranch” — directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci — had escaped the clutches of Capitol Films and has now been penciled in for a June release date. We quickly received a comment from an eagle eyed reader (thanks Anne!) who pointed us in the direction of a news story from 2008 (yeah, the film has been sitting around for a while) that revealed that indie-rock tex-mex artists Calexico had worked on the score with composer James Newton Howard.

Wim Wenders latest film, “Palermo Shooting,” debuted at Cannes in 2008, and then….pretty much disappeared.

The film follows a high fashion photographer as he journeys to the titular city, chatting with Death (um, played by Dennis Hopper) while Milla Jovovich (playing herself) and Lou Reed drop by for cameo appearances (the picture’s possible minor saving grace is that is also stars (the rather attractive) Giovanna Mezzogiorno, the excellent lead of the strong Cannes 2009 offering, “Vincere”).

We weren’t there unfortuntately. We were in Mexico on vacation (if you haven’t heard already for the 4th millionth time). And sadly one of our own lost someone that night and couldn’t post a review [ed. more than understandable, our deepest condolences]. But we’ve cobbled together some of what we heard of the various folked that covered Bob Dylan tracks (some of the reports are actually subpar and some complained about audio problems, who knows we can’t say since we weren’ there, but this one says, ‘meh‘.

Lo and behold, more Dylan. Shocking, right? Looks like the ITunes version of I’m Not There: Original Soundtrack has three extra songs on it. You have to purchase the entire album to buy them, so we’re not spending the dough (sorry, ad free at the moment), but you obviously can hear snippets on Itunes.

The additional tracks are Calexico’s version of the instrumental “Main Title Theme (Billy)” from Dylan’s soundtrack to “Pat Garett & Billy The Kid,” the version of which can be heard in the movie, and which is actually a different song from the track Los Lobos covered (simply titled “Billy,” their’s is a mexi-melt version of the song with lyrics).

We’ve already heard it and given you a pretty detailed review of what we thought, but now you can listen to 3 songs from the Bob Dylan meta-biopic “I’m Not There” soundtrack on your own and see what you think.

Sony is streaming three tracks from the 2-disc album that is due October 30 including Sufjan Stevens’ take on “Ring Them Bells,” Cat Power’s cover “Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again” and Jim James of My Morning Jacket with Calexico’s rendition of “Goin’ To Acapulco.”

In case you’re curious, here’s the final 2-disc tracklist that we already reported (and confirmed via the discs we got).

Remember the kinda lackluster “I’m Not There” concert we told you about that happened back on October 7? (it only featured Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, John Doe and Bob Weir – no disrespect to them, but it’s a small lineup – did anyone actually go to this?)

Well, there’s another one and it’s better – at least better if you’re an indie-rocker and better if you want to hear some people that were intrinsic to the “I’m Not There” 2-disc soundtrack set we’ve gone on and on about.

Ok, so what music is actually used in the movie “I’m Not There,” right?

Well, as we mentioned in our first preview, despite all the noise about the much-talked about covers, the movie leans much more heavily on original Bob Dylan tunes rather than interpolations.

Dylan renditions are generally used for the actors to lipsynch along with for their performance scenes (those examples are in the above link), though you do hear traces of instrumental parts that are clearly covers throughout the film (Yo La Tengo in particular).

Turns out Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo wasn’t the only one producing tracks for the Bob Dylan biopic “I’m Not There” soundtrack, but with 34 tracks and over two dozen individual artists recording songs for the album, this would stand to reason (the complete tracklist is here).

Joe Henry, the singer-songwriter who’s generally (and condescendingly) noted as being Madonna’s brother-in-law produced a bunch of sessions for the album including “I’m Not There” Dylan actor Marcus Carl Franklin’s rendition of “When The Ship Comes In” (from The Times They Are A-Changin’) Richie Havens’ take on “Tombstone Blues” (from Highway 61 Revisited), Ramblin’ Jack Elliot’s “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” cover, Bob Forrest’s “Moonshiner” (The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3) and the pair of tracks recorded by ex X singer-guitarist John Doe.

Vinyl Fever looks to have trumped all of us chasing after the “I’m Not There” soundtrack details and good for them. They’ve got what appears to be the entire tracklist and it syncs up with those artists that we recently reported first – Eddie Vedder, Karen O, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Sufjan Stevens, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. As we reported, their release date is October 30, however their tracklisting has 33, not 34 tracks (Deep Throat has been known to have off days).
