One of our favorite publications to watch this time of year is Cahiers du Cinéma, as their list of Best Films is always worth paying attention to in order to see what European critics look for in a film. One of those outlets has always been Cahiers du Cinéma, based out of France. The magazine is legendary in the realm of film and has been going strong since the ‘50s. But earlier this week, the staff of Cahiers has walked out as a new ownership conglomerate takes over operations.

With the Hollywood Foreign Press Association handing out its picks for best films of 2019 last night at the Golden Globes, it’s time to look at another foreign press outlet and see what they think are the best films of the last year. And perhaps unsurprisingly, Cahiers du Cinéma has very different opinions than the HFPA.

Right off the bat, it’s important to know that Cahiers is looking at films that were released in France during the 2019 calendar year, which is why films such as “The Image Book” (the outlet’s #1 film) and “The Mule” (#9) made the cut.

As we each and every year, December usually features us highlighting some of the biggest top 10 lists that are released. And Cahiers du Cinéma’s list of Best Films is always one that we pay attention to, giving us a good snapshot of what European critics tend to think about cinema. As the end of 2018 rapidly approaches, it’s that time of year where some of the biggest names in film criticism release their top 10 lists. One of those lists that we always try to highlight is that of France’s Cahiers du cinéma. However, since the publication’s list focuses on films released in Franche in 2018, there are some projects that you probably won’t see on many other year-end lists.

First, you’ll notice that films like “Phantom Thread,” “The Post,” and “On the Beach at Night Alone” are all on the 2018 list, despite being released last year in the US.
