Weekend Box Office: Katherine Heigl, Horse Lose To Nerd Entrepeneurs

Like a horse race, this weekend had three photo finishers, with a Sunday winner possibly being a bit too premature to call – expect some Monday morning jostling, especially with the holiday. As in many equestrian events, there was a former first place finisher, a starry upstart, and a stoic newcomer with success painted all over its face. And like a few horse races in the past, “Secretariat” was involved.

The Randall Wallace drama, however, was a definite underperformer, and with numbers still in debate, it does look like Disney’s proud thoroughbred is going to bow before last week’s top picture, “The Social Network.” The critically-lauded internet drama has definitely won over a few fair-weather fans with a muscular second weekend hold.

In Theaters: ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,’ ‘Legend Of The Guardian,’ ‘Buried’

A variety of options for mass consumption this week at the multiplex with three films opening wide. First up is Oliver Stone‘s “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” which follows his last two films “W” and “World Trade Center” in his quest to forever be at the center of the zeitgeist of America. He might have a more solid hit on his hands here, given the hot stars, subject matter and recent publicity for Michael Douglas‘ health issues.

TIFF ’10 Review: ‘Buried’ Can’t Seem To Find A Way Out Of Its High Concept Premise

Yes, what you’ve heard is true — Rodrigo Cortes’ thriller “Buried” takes place entirely within a coffin. No flashbacks or other gimmicks here, its ninety minutes with Ryan Reynolds fighting for his life armed with little more than a cellphone, a Zippo, a small flask of alcohol and an indefatigable will to live. And while the story is admirably high concept, it is ultimately marred by a number of implausibilities and some tepid political commentary that sap the energy right out of the film.

Hype for Rodrigo Cortés’ “Buried” starring Ryan Reynolds has been extremely high ever since the film premiered at Sundance earlier this year (see a recent poster that just keeps amping up that buzz).

About a U.S. contractor working in Iraq who is attacked and then wakes up to find he is buried alive inside a coffin with only a lighter and a cell phone, the picture is a one-man show (mostly just Reynolds in a coffin) and a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap.

New Trailer For Rodrigo Cortes’ Claustrophobic Single-Setting Thriller ‘Buried’

A new trailer for Rodrigo Cortes’ Ryan Reynolds-led one man show in “Buried” has been released but somewhat disappointingly shows no footage, instead opting to only feature stills and audio from the pic.

It’s sort of understandable though as the claustrophobic thriller is reportedly set predominantly in a coffin and follows an American civilian contractor who has been buried alive and held for ransom with only a handful of items including phone, a lighter and a knife to conjure a way out.

M Night Shyamalan Teaming Up With ‘Buried’ Writer For ‘Night Chronicles’ Project ‘Twelve Strangers’; Plus More Details Emerge On Secret Script

We’re only a week away now from M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender,” which the filmmaker hopes will salvage his reputation after his disastrous last couple of pictures (and signs are there it could well do that, commercially if not critically). He’s already moving on; details broke earlier in the week about the director’s secret new script, which is currently making the rounds around town, with Bruce Willis, Bradley Cooper and Gwyneth Paltrow attached.

Shyamalan clearly isn’t content with just that, however, as Deadline are reporting that the writer/director is currently setting up the second movie in his “Night Chronicles” series, which like Sam Raimi’s Ghost House or Guillermo Del Toro’s Double Dare You, sees the helmer producing a series of low-budget horror pics.

Shocktillyoudrop has a peek at the new one-sheet for “Buried,” the Ryan Reynolds-starring vehicle about a contractor in Iraq who is buried alive and held for ransom.

After its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the claustrophobic picture was quickly bought by Lionsgate for distribution. The film is supposed to take place almost entirely in the small confines of a coffin and the one-man, one-setting vehicle could prove to be a marketing challenge.

Sundance Buzz: ‘Buried,’ ‘Winter’s Bone,’ ‘Catfish’ Pick Up Festival Plaudits

So, we couldn’t make it to Sundance this year, but that’s not going to stop us from keeping you on top of events there. As ever, the festival’s fairly front-loaded, so it’s been a busy few days over in Park City, with many of the bigger, starrier premieres already haven taken place. Buzz is starting to filter in on some of these, as well as the hidden, unexpected gems, so, without further ado…

The festival kicked off on Thursday night with the premiere of “Howl,” the feature debut of documentarians Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (“The Celluloid Closet”).

We won’t be attending Sundance this year (what else is new) but for all those who are, we thought we’d help you out by listing the dozen and or so films worth checking out. Of course, they’re predominantly films already floating around our radar but there’s always the “An Education”-type films of the world that can come out of nowhere. Alright, you’ve already seen our Most Anticipated Films of 2010 feature our Least Anticipated Films of 2010 feature and now we have the Potentially Decent Escapist Entertainment Films (Or Mildly Interesting Indie Ones) Of 2010.

It should be no surprise to you by now what type of film we generally cherish (non-pandering intelligent cinema), which ones we typically loathe (lowest common denominator chum meant to plop popcorn munchers in seats) and which ones we treat with suspicion until otherwise verified as something being other than slightly above reproach.

Christopher Nolan Exits ‘The Prisoner,’ Jon Hamm Joins Zack Snyder’s ‘Sucker Punch,’ First Look: Ryan Reynolds In ‘Buried’

Christopher Nolan has evidently exited the film adaptation of British television show “The Prisoners” that he was tapped to direct back in the summer of 2006. Producer Barry Mendel notes that “Nolan has dropped out of it but we have a first draft by David and Janet Peoples who wrote “Twelve Monkeys” and David wrote “Unforgiven” and it’s a good draft and we’re working on the script right now.” Hmm, could this be due to that certain sequel he might have on the horizon?

Eighty Minutes Of Ryan Reynolds In A Coffin? Indie Thriller ‘Buried’ To Be A Minimalist One-Man-One-Setting Show

We previously mentioned in passing the newly announced Ryan Reynolds’ indie thriller, Rodrigo Cortés’ “Buried,” which will find center on a civilian contractor who is kidnapped and buried alive in Iraq with only a cell phone, candle and knife at hand.

Reynold’s role was noted by the trades to be one that will “stretch his acting chops” as the film would be “one in which he holds the screen through most of the picture.” Sure, we thought, they’re a dime a dozen.
