Putting together the 100 Most Anticipated Films list is a beast in any year. Still, in the new accelerated age of streaming with HBO Max, Apple TV+, Amazon, Netflix, and all the new players popping up every single day, it seems, the task becomes more and more daunting and nearly impossible (we could have easily gone to 200 this year).

So we’re post-COVID, but oops, not-yet post-COVID, but somehow movies have survived, even if the theatrical market becomes a more challenging and riskier gambit.

Steven Soderbergh isn’t your typical filmmaker. Honestly, we have to wonder if he’s even human. His productivity is off the charts, as he spent 2020 not only finishing up one feature film (“Let Them All Talk”) but filming an entirely new feature (“No Sudden Move”), while re-editing multiple films in his spare time and also watching tons of TV shows and films. It’s impressive…and somewhat scary just how much Soderbergh was able to accomplish in a year that was subject to an industry shutdown.

Sundance Report: Soderbergh’s ‘Girlfriend Experience’ Does Screen

Despite trying to play it off as a rumor, Steven Soderbergh did screen his latest lo-fi indie film, “The Girlfriend Experience” at Sundance last night. Shot apparently on a weekend last year, the film explores the world of high-class escorts who provide more than just sex (a make-believe “girlfriend experience”) and stars young rising porn star Sasha Grey. Various reports are online.

Jeffrey Wells calls it “not half bad” and notes that excellent Brooklyn-based film critic (who we see at our bar all the time) Glen Kenny plays a “sleazy erotic website guy who exploits the main hooker character (Grey).

‘Che’ Roadshow At Home? Soderbergh’s Epic Hits Video OnDemand On Friday

Not living in New York, L.A., or one of the other nine major cities that are currently screening Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” in its full roadshow version? Well, starting Friday January 23, you can do the roadshow experience in your home if you like as both films will be available on IFC Video On Demand (if you have something above basic cable this should be available to you).

So yeah, conceivably, if you have the stamina, you two can see the whole ambitious enterprise in one sitting only with convenient pause bathroom breaks, a plethora of snacks and in your underwear if you so choose.

‘Che’ To Announce Its Distributor Any Day Now?

We just asked yesterday, who the hell is tending the ‘Che’ house? No one seems to be doing publicity for the film. No one in the industry seems to know how to contact anyone about its appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival in less than seven days.

Well, According to Anne Thompson, Steven Soderbergh’s two-part, four-hour-plus ‘Che’ Guevarra epic is currently negotiating a final distribution deal and we should all expect an announcement soon (maybe this is why no P.R.
