Between, 2011 and 2017, he release five films—” The Tree of Life” (2011) “To the Wonder” (2012) “Knight of Cups” (2015) “Voyage of Time” (2016) and ” Song to Song” (2017)—and you could consider it seven if you count the second version of “Voyage Of Time” and the new Criterion Collection recut and extended edition of “The Tree of Life.” For a man who went missing for twenty years, Terrence Malick appears to be making up for lost time.

Back in 1992, Sally Potter was a pretty big deal. She had just released “Orlando” to universal acclaim, which featured an exquisite performance from Tilda Swinton as the titular nobleman who moved through centuries of British history without aging. It was an ambitious film that put Potter on the map and gave us hope that she might be the next important voice in indie cinema. Lars von Trier has never been short on ambition, but even he must’ve wondered what he could possibly do next after his two-part, button-pushing epic “Nymphomaniac.” Well, he’s decided to turn from sex to death. First announced in 2015, “The House That Jack Built” was originally pitched as an 8-part TV series, but along the way, it has been retooled into a feature film, with Von Trier’s producer saying earlier this year that it’s structurally in line with “Nymphomaniac.” Either way, it sounds like yet another effort that will see the director take audiences to the edge.

While the biggest news surrounding Terrence Malick at the moment is that the reclusive director will be making a rare public appearance next month at the Princeton Garden Theater for a live conversation following a screening of Roberto Rossellini‘s “Journey To Italy” (tough nuts, it’s already sold out), the filmmaker is already at work on his next feature, “Radegund.” Even though his love triangle music drama “Weightless” is yet to come, cameras are rolling on WWII movie, and all we know officially so far is that “Inglourious Basterds” actor August Diehl is leading the movie, with newcomer Valerie Pachner also in the film.

But Jesus H Christ, this particular version, that uses the Oliver Hirschbiegel-directed film to mock the indifferent reaction to the “Avatar” trailer is fucking fantastically funny and pure gold.

The Criterion Collection has set three new DVD releases for the month of October.

Remember in the ’80s when Wim Wenders could seemingly do no wrong? One of these releases is his atmospheric wandering-angel classic, “Wings Of Desire,” with the great German actor Bruno Ganz (Oct 20). Criterion calls the film one of the “loveliest city symphonies” and “movie poetry,” and you can’t argue with that. It’s a wonderful film. Let’s hope this means they put out “Paris, Texas” on Criterion one day.
