Every Tuesday, discriminating viewers are confronted with a flurry of choices: new releases on disc and on-demand, vintage, and original movies on any number of streaming platforms, catalog titles making a splash on Blu-ray or 4K. This weekly column sifts through all of those choices to pluck out the movies most worth your time, no matter how you’re watching. 

The numerical value assigned to the past two weeks’ disc and streaming releases is up for some disagreement – there are nine new titles, to be sure, but one of them has three movies inside it, and the other has 39.

Sony must have been pretty bummed when making the upcoming film “Ladies in Black.” Not that the content of the film is bad, as the first trailer shows viewers that they’re in for a fun, thought-provoking, good time. But the studio was probably a little upset that the film couldn’t be called “The Women in Black,” to match the best-selling novel the film is based on, written by author Madeleine St John.

With “Beverly Hills Cop IV” now actually happening, we may get the return of Superstar Eddie Murphy, something we haven’t seen in some time. But first we’ll see the actor take a turn toward the dramatic in what is essentially a quasi-remake of “Driving Miss Daisy.”

Bruce Beresford directs this one that instead of focusing on a humble chauffeur, centers around a humble cook, who is hired to care for a woman dying of cancer, and of course, winds up being more involved in what is all a very heartwarming story.
