Following the heartbreaking and all too frequent stories of systemic racism and police brutality against black people and people of color in this country, industry folk and audiences alike have begun to cast a critical eye against “cop shows” – in attempt to both understand and deconstruct how they may shape and perpetuate misconstrued perceptions of the police. Essentially, everyone is re-examing what they do and trying to see how they can better it.

One of these cop shows looking to make changes, is the comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” In a recent conversation with Access Daily’s Kit Hoover and Scott Evans, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Terry Crews reveals that new scripts for the upcoming eighth season have been completely thrown out.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that streaming viewership has increased quite a bit due to the social distancing and self-isolation guidelines being followed during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. What else are people going to do if they can’t go to bars, sporting events, concerts, or the movie theater? Read a book? Paint a picture? Learn a language? Ha! We’re going to stream “Bob’s Burgers,” obviously.

According to a Nielsen study (via Variety), streaming viewership rose 85% over the first three weeks of March, as compared to the same time in 2019, largely due to people staying indoors.

Liz Garbus’ “Lost Girls” shares a subtitle with the Robert Kolker book it’s based on: “An Unsolved American Mystery.” The mystery in question is that of the Long Island serial killer, who murdered at least ten women— many of them sex workers —over some twenty years, near the South Shore of Long Island. Based on Garbus’ filmography, which includes the Oscar-nominated documentaries “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and “The Farm: Angola, U.S.A,” you might assume this is yet another Netflix-bound true crime doc.

Earlier this year, NBC came in and saved the day for canceled comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” The Andy Samberg-starring series was cut by Fox after 5 seasons, only to have rival network NBC swoop in to bring the cop comedy back. And now, the comedy series is ready to venture into the realm of the #MeToo movement.

According to series co-creator Dan Goor, who spoke at a recent TCA event (via The Wrap), the series is looking to tackle the controversy in a thoughtful way in a future episode.

Last week, we learned that Fox was canceling three of their serialized single-camera comedy series, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “The Last Man on Earth,” and “The Mick.” The fan outrage was immediate, particularly for the case of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which had been on the air for 5 seasons. If there isn’t already, there ought to be an improbably long German compound word to describe the slightly panicky, drowning feeling of overwhelmed anticipation that is one’s natural state when contemplating just how much good TV there is out there — and that’s even before additional shows like this week’s “GLOW” and “The Mist” have been piled onto the queue. Add in an appreciation of just how few hours there are in a day, and just how much “other stuff” one is supposed to be doing with one’s life, and the prospect of even making a dent in the mountain of unwatched Golden Age TV can actually trigger a full-blown panic attack.
