Now, in his latest film, “Broker,” Kore-eda returns to Asia, but not quite Japan. Instead, his new drama takes place in South Korea, and revolves around the peculiar phenomenon of baby boxes and the adoption black market.

Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s next directorial effort is the baby-napping (kidnapping for babies) drama “Broker” which stars Song Kang-ho, who previously played the patriarch in the Best Picture winner “Parasite” and is a fixture of South Korean cinema. Kore-eda, a Japanese filmmaker, made waves in the film awards circuit with his fantastic 2018 drama “Shoplifters” which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and even etched out a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination.

“Some leave, some retrieve,” is the tagline from the most recent teaser for “Broker,” the latest directorial effort from Hirokazu Kore-eda. As part of the Official Selection for the 75th Cannes Film Festival, “Broker” follows Sanghyeon (Song Kang-ho) and Dongsu (Gang Dong-won). The former is always in debt while the latter works at a baby box facility (where one is safely able to leave a newborn child).

Although it turned out to be David Lynch-less, this year’s Cannes line-up is in no shortage of big names (complete list here). Claire Denis returns to the competition section for the first time in 34 years with her Nicaraguan ‘80s romance “Stars At Noon”; James Gray premieres his childhood-inspired “Armageddon Time”; and, as the headliner, “Crash” and “Videodrome” director David Cronenberg looks set to return to his body-horror roots with the Viggo-in-chrysalis “Crimes of the Future.” And if that competition doesn’t sound fierce enough already, there’s also a new movie from Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, titled “Broker,” which now has its first trailer.

Hirokazu Kore-eda is one of the best filmmakers working today. Full stop. So, the second we learn new information about a new project from the director, you better believe we’re going to get excited. And judging by the information about his upcoming film, tentatively titled “Broker,” we have every reason to expect another great feature from Kore-eda.

According to news from Pierce Conran on Twitter, Kore-eda is lining up his next film, “Broker,” which will find the Japanese filmmaker working with a Korean cast to tell a story about the baby box phenomenon in South Korea.
