‘The Woman In Me’: Universal Wins Bid To Adapt Britney Spears Book, ‘Wicked’ Director Jon M. Chu To Direct

The Britney Spears story is coming to the big screen. Deadline reports that Universal won the rights to adapt the pop singer’s 2022 #1 New York Times bestseller “The Woman In Me.” And the studio hired a solid choice to direct it: “Wicked” filmmaker Jon M. Chu, who’s no stranger to working in the pop music vernacular. Other films by by the director include “In The Heights,” “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” and “Step Up 2: The Streets.”

Since February of this year, five documentaries have been released surrounding the fraught legal battles concerning Britney Spears and the #FreeBritney movement. BBC, CNN, Hulu, and now Netflix have all joined in on the latest media craze surrounding the pop star’s battle to free herself from a conservatorship that was placed on her over a decade ago. Initially, in response to Spears’ increasingly deteriorating public persona and mental health (a sad saga which needs no reiteration), the conservatorship was a court-appointed order which was speculated by fans for years to have been unjustly implemented.

While pop sensation Britney’s Spears has sold 150 million records worldwide, one could argue the last time Spears was super culturally relevant was circa 2011 and the release of Femme Fatale. But even that record, selling 1.5 million copies worldwide, was way down from 2008’s Circus, which sold 4 million copies worldwide. She released two subsequent records after that, but they both sold a paltry fraction of those numbers. She seemed just to be enjoying life.

Previously, these projects have been relegated to classic rock, or at the very least, artists that came out before 1990, it would appear that Sony is ready to jump into the new millennium with a new musical based on the music of Britney Spears.

KISS’ Gene Simmons is reportedly set to voice the title character in Joe Johnston’s “The Wolf Man.” The iconic rockstar was asked by director Johnston to record the creature’s “howling voice” which he duly accepted, being a fan of the original Lon Chaney Jr. film and of Lon Chaney Sr., whose nickname ‘The Man Of A Thousand Faces’ was used by Simmons for a song on his 1978 solo album and for his production company.

That electric bugaloo joke just never gets old. Entertainment Weekly reports a second “Sex and the City” movie is within sight of being green lit. No huge surprise commercially speaking, since the first one was such a smashing success, but it is amazing creator Michael Patrick King came up with yet another avenue to explore in this franchise. Correct us if we’re wrong (we aren’t) but wasn’t the point of a movie to tie up the loose ends of the women’s lives and give us all some closure after the heart wrenching series finale?

Who’s ready for a film version of Britney Spear’s turbulent, drug-addled teenage life? No? Neither is Britney, apparently. With her comeback finally kicking into gear with promotions/tours for her latest album Circus and its first single “Womanizer” soon to get underway, a film documenting what a trailer-trash skank she was isn’t exactly what she needs right now (or ever). Well, her estranged mom Lynne doesn’t care, she’s already approach a few Hollywood big guns to get her book “Through The Storm” about her daughter’s sexually promiscuous activities and drug use from a young age and the film will also cover the troubled stars rocky marriage to Kevin Federline.

This year the MTV VMAs returned to L.A. for the first time in a decade and the production’s placement on the Paramount lot turned up some interesting collaborations. The group behind the forthcoming Judd Apatow produced, “Get Him to the Greek,” which is set to star VMA host Russell Brand and Britney Spears collaborator Jonah Hill, are doing pre-production work on the same lot and decided to take advantage of access to some the female musicians by shooting vignettes with them that can be inserted into the film.

Thank fucking god and, we told you so.

Those ludicrous reports in the British press that said Britney Spears would play a lesbian killer in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming remake of “Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” have proven to be false (gee, really?? You wonder why we’re always down on the U.K. press).

A representative for Spears denied the report telling Access Hollywood, ”Though she definitely intends to explore acting roles down the road, right now she’s concentrating on recording her next album.”

And a source close to Tarantino is quoted as saying, ”There is no truth to this.” All’s well that ends well.

File under: the stupidest thing we’ve read today. Reports come from the U.K. (of course), that Britney Spears is going to play a lesbian killer in Quentin Tarantino’s “Faster Pussycat Kill Kill” remake. First off that idea is nothing more than a twinkle in QT’s eye and casting? Fat chance, he’s waist deep in “Inglorious Bastards.” He hasn’t even cast the thing yet.

This sounds like specious bullshit report, and we can’t even believe we’re giving this even the time of day, but what sucks about being a blogger or a reporter even is that you want to stay on top of stuff in the off chance it actually happens.
