Lynne Ramsay is one of the most acclaimed and unique filmmakers working today. And with her previous films, “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and most recently, “You Were Never Really Here,” the filmmaker is no stranger to the darker side of life and people. So, it makes perfect sense that horror might be in her future, even though the idea of a straight up jump-scare fest is probably not Ramsay’s style.

“The Favourite” may have missed out of major honors from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle, but the British Independent Film community bestowed its adoration on the critically acclaimed drama by awarding it 10 British Independent Film Awards on Sunday night.  The Fox Searchlight release took Best British Independent Film, Best Director (Yorgos Lanthimos), Best Actress (Olivia Colman), Best Supporting Actress (Rachel Weisz), Best Screenplay and five other honors.

We all know the big, starry prestige pictures that are elbowing each other for Oscars this year, but as the clock winds down on 2017, it’s always worth remembering the smaller pictures that might be overlooked. This year’s nominees for the British Independent Film Awards certainly provided more than a few choices to add to your catch-up list.

Leading the pack is William Oldroyd‘s “Lady Macbeth,” which snapped up 15 nominations, while Armando Ianucci‘s “The Death Of Stalin” and Rungano Nyoni‘s “I Am Not A Witch” came close behind with 13 nods each.

As December rolls along (only twenty more shopping days until Christmas!) the awards keeping coming, and over the weekend, it was the folks at the British Independent Film Awards turn to hand out the honors. In case you’re wondering, this will have little to no impact on how Oscar voting will go, but if anything, it’s another chance to shout out some movies that will likely not get recognized by the Academy.
