When you think of Paul Feig, you don’t automatically think Master of Horror. In fact, the one time that the filmmaker actually toyed with horror elements was in the middling 2016 “Ghostbusters” reboot. Other than that, Feig has found himself mostly sticking to comedies (last year’s “A Simple Favor” being the lone exception). But with the recently announced “Dark Army,” Feig is going full-on horror.

Next week, Universal will launch their Dark Universe franchise, a new series of films reviving the classic movie monsters from their back catalog. The studio has really put themselves out there, formally announcing the project and lining up big-name stars like Tom Cruise (who leads “The Mummy“), Johnny Depp (The Invisible Man), Russell Crowe (Dr. Jekyll), and Javier Bardem (Frankenstein) for roles.

Hot off the success of his live-action “Beauty And The Beast” remake at Disney — I mean, I guess you could consider a movie that just cleared a billion dollars at the global box office a bit of a success — it certainly feels like director Bill Condon is set up nicely for his next project. That kind of money tends to inspire studios to hand over blank checks, meaning that Condon could finally get to work on whatever passion project or remake he currently has on his wishlist.

If you’ve felt rumblings in the ground and ripples in your water glasses in the last few days, that’s because monsters are on the way. Or more accurately, they’re on an island in the Pacific, the setting for “Kong: Skull Island,” Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ thoroughly enjoyable reboot of the giant ape franchise. The film doesn’t just include the massive monkey made famous in the 1933 original, but also pits him and the human cast against a menagerie of inventive giant beasts that make up the rest of the population of the titular archipelago, as well as setting it up as part of an ongoing WB/Legendary monster universe that will eventually pit Kong against Godzilla.

Making a great science fiction sequel may be easier than creating a killer comedy sequel, but not by much. Producers have been turning out second (and third, and fourth) chapters to continue stories of space and advanced technology for decades, but with the exception of a killer run of films in the 1980s and early ’90s, most of them stink.

The ratio of bad sci-fi sequels to good only makes the best ones seem even more impressive.
