The Playlist has admittedly drifted off in the wrong direction of late. Let’s try and reign it in and get back to the good stuff. Canadian filmmaker of the wintry and melodramatically delirious mien Guy Maddin (“Brand Upon The Brain,” “The Saddest Music On Earth”) has a new film on the way.

Much like his incredible, drunken-dreamy docu-fantasia, “My Winnipeg” (one of 2008’s best), this one is also commissioned by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB).

Guy Maddin’s ‘Brand Upon The Brain’ & ‘Salo’ Coming (Back) To Criterion

Criterion has unveiled its August release schedule on its website and two of the highlights for us are Guy Maddin’s family psychodrama “Brand Upon The Brain,” – which toured as a live event with celebrity narrators (Lou Reed, Crispin Glover), an 10-piece orchestra and sound effects/foley artists and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s notorious perverse sadomasochistic classic, “Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom,” which actually was out on Criterion years ago, but went out of print (copies have been on Ebay for outrageous prices over the years).

Tribeca Review: Guy Maddin Continues His Wintry Obsessions In ‘My Winnipeg’

Guy Maddin must be OCD. The distinctively arcane Canadian filmmaker has been obsessed with wintry, snowglobe aesthetics, eroticized adolescent Freudian examination and ’50s like paranoiac melodrama almost since his career began.

Thematically, when not examining the secret life of ice nymphs, one legged beer baronesses and German expressionism-esque hospitals gone awry, the Great White Northern director has been singularly fixated on his imagined dysfunctional family and the winter wonderland of his Manitoba landscape of birth.

Incest, Lesbianism, Crispin Glover, Lighthouse Terrors! It’s Brand Upon The Brain!

Last night’s debut of Guy Maddin’s “Brand Upon The Brain!” was an almost overwhelming cinematic spectacle – in a good way of course. Throughout the movie one had to decide, would I be watching the weirdly wondrous film, the 3 lab-coated foley artists creating live, on-the-spot sound effects, the 11-piece orchestra, grave narrator Crispin Glover or the Eunuch-sounding Male soprano? (who Maddin apparently met in a Winnipeg sauna: “He has absolutely no body hair. He had some sort of medical misfortune in his childhood that kept his voice very [woman-like].”)

There are worse problems to have.

A few weeks back we told you all about Guy Maddin‘s “Brand Upon The Brain!” – the Winnipeg surrealist director’s latest film that will play in local art-house theaters alongside orchestral accompaniment. We reported that Isabella Rossellini (the star of Maddin’s “Saddest Music In the World“) would be one of the special guest narrators of the film (and named a few potential others) and Maddin has now unveiled the the dates that his special orators will appear at.
