Behind The Scenes: Karen O & The Kids, The ‘Wild Things’ Soundtrack Band

“I don’t know why she picked who she picked [to join in the recording of the soundtrack],” Spike Jonze, director of “Where The Wild Things,” says of Karen O’s musical collaborative choices for the film in this behind-the-scenes clip. “But it was a definitely a specific casting select.”

In case your memory is short, O’s musical collaborators on the soundtrack (who she dubbed collectively as Karen O & The Kids) which she wrote and orchestrated (though there is a separate score for the film as well done by Carter Burwell) is an eclectic mass of indie rockers — members of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Jonze’s brother, producer Squeak-E Clean, Bradford Cox of Deerhunter, Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Folk Implosion collaborator Imaad Wasif and Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and Dead Weather, Dean Fertita (member of Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs), Liars’ guitarist Aaron Hemphill, the Bird and the Bee’s Greg Kurstin, Services’ Tristan Bechet, and Gris Gris’s Oscar Michel, plus a an untrained children’s choir.

As previously reported the soundtrack features a super group of indie musicians that include Bradford Cox of Deerhunter, Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Folk Implosion collaborator Imaad Wasif, Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and Dead Weather, Aaron Hemphill, the Bird and the Bee’s Greg Kurstin, both members of the YYYs, Nick Zinner and Brian Chase and many many more.

Remember that super group of indie-rock artists we’ve revealed to you over the months, who are working with Karen O on the soundtrack to Spike Jonze’s “Where The Wild Things Are” — members of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Jonze’s brother, producer Squeak-E Clean, Bradford Cox of Deerhunter, Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Folk Implosion collaborator Imaad Wasif and Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and Dead Weather?

Well, O dubbed the collective, Karen O And The Kids and the soundtrack to the film — which we already noted that Geffen/Interscope was putting out — will be released on September 29, a full 17 days before the film hits theaters.

Karen O: ‘Wild Things’ Musical Mastermind? Flaming Lips In New Trailer?

Ok, so Karen O of the Yeah Yeah, Yeahs, wrote the musical songs for “Where The Wild Things Are,” and Carter Burwell (“Adaptation,” “Being John Malkovich”) wrote the score. Did they work together? It doesn’t seem to be the case (via Burwell’s site), “Karen O has already written songs and other pieces of music for the film. I recorded the score in early April (and continue to tweak it) and the film is scheduled for release in October 2009.”

As we’ve already noted, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman had an all-star cast of musicians helping her out including, members of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Jonze’s brother, producer Squeak-E Clean, Bradford Cox of Deerhunter, YYYs/Folk Implosion collaborator Imaad Wasif and Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and Dead Weather.

Karen O Creates Supergroup For ‘Wild Things’ Score; The Raconteur’s Jack Lawrence Joins The List

Alright, so on Friday, we gave you a first listen of Karen O’s score to “Where The Wild Things Are” by putting a close ear to a ‘WTWTA’ featurette that starred director Spike Jonze and author Maurice Sendak talking about the creativity behind the clip, and it obviously featured some of the original music written for the film. The music is “childlike” as she said it would be and quite wonderful actually; everything that we had hoped for.

Ok, there’s not much to it, but in an interview with Nylon, Karen O of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, has revealed more than she ever has about what to expect from her songs written for Spike Jonze’s “Where The Wild Things Are” film. Sure, we all expected them to be child-like, but this is basically the first time she’s really described the songs.

Karen O Talks ‘Wild Things’ Score; Says Yeah Yeah Yeahs Members Nick Zinner & Brian Chase Helped; No Arcade Fire In Film

Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs has been extremely reticent to discuss her musical involvement in Spike Jonze’s live-action adaptation of “Where The Wild Things Are.” Part of this was because the initial announcement was made probably a little earlier than all parties wanted and perhaps partly because the YYYs frontwoman and Jonze used to be romantically involved.

We know she’s composed the score to the film with Carter Burwell and written a few “songs” for the film as well (whether they’re traditional songs with lyrics and singing though is unclear; we envision cooing lullabies), but at almost every turn when asked in the last year, O has been extremely taciturn on the subject (so much so she’s even turned Bradford Cox of Deerhunter — who helped her out a bit — paranoid as well and he wouldn’t discuss either; “I’m just not interested in talking about the soundtrack.

The original — now infamous — and contentious test screenings of “Where The Wild Things Are” in early 2008 featured temp music that boasted tons of the Arcade Fire and also acoustic Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs songs.

We know this because we spoke to the source who wrote AICN and was the big leak from that initial screening. He told us last summer, “95% of the temp song placements were from the Arcade Fire, the rest were acoustic Yeah Yeah Yeah’s songs.

As reported here first* back in February, Deerhunter’s sickly-looking Bradford Cox has been contributing to Karen O’s work on the “Where The Wild Things Are” soundtrack for Spike Jonze (something else we also noticed first). *or at least we’re the first people to notice this was a big deal, the original source sure didn’t.

Now Pitchfork has gotten a statement from Cox after SPIN magazine reiterated in a recent issue that Cox was working with O on the film’s music (they just said he had flown down to L.A.

Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox Reveals He’s Working With Karen O On ‘Wild Things’ Soundtrack

Did Bradford Cox, the hideously emaciated marfan syndrome-stricken singer of Deerhunter and side project Atlas Sound inadvertently out himself as being part of the Karen O-penned songs for the soundtrack to Spike Jonze’s adaptation of “Where The Wild Things Are“?

The two are mutual admirers (O once famously called Deerhunter’s live show a near “religious experience”) and friends and in an interview today with online Atlanta mag Creative Loafing, Cox apparently let the cat out of the bag.
