As many have already noted, this weekend is crazy crowded at the Box-Office, but a lot of it looks like fucking abysmal dreck.

Ok, there’s no major films per se, but the they’re all mid level studio or high level indies (they’re called “specialty pictures”) that probably won’t generate huge box-office numbers but are all basically in competition with one-another.

More than likely, some dumb-down studio film like “Eagle Eye” will stay at the top of the box-office by default.

We just got back from our “day before the release” screening of “Blindness.” Having received mixed reviews, Fernando Meirelles’s latest (“City of God”) isn’t as terrible as some say, but it’s not very good either. The positive aspects of the film aren’t enough to outweigh the unfavorable second half of the film. The main thing going against the picture are its similarities to superior post-apocalyptic films such as “28 Days Later” and “Children of Men.” When comparing the three films (which one can’t help but do here), “Blindness” can’t help but fall short.

The Baltimore-based National Federation of the Blind is planning a protest of the Fernando Meirelles’ (“City of God”) latest film, “Blindness,” when it is released on Friday. President of the organization, Marc Maurer believes that the blindness in the movie does not act as a clever allegory for the breakdown in society, but just continues t0 perpetuate the stereotypes that have kept the blind-man down. “The movie portrays blind people as monster, and I believe it to be a lie.

“Blindness” by Fernando Meirelles

Kim Voynar weighs in on the changes that have been made to the film since its premiere at Cannes this year. The change, according to her, is great. “I’m happy to report that the newly edited version of Blindness is a vast improvement over what we saw at Cannes. Not only did director Fernando Meirelles (who also made one of the best films ever, City of God) remove the irritating and distracting voiceover, but as a result of doing so had to significantly re-cut, and in the process ended up with a much, much better film.

A few more additions to the Toronto International Film Festival have been announced and none that will surprise anyone. The first being Fernando Meirelles’ apocalyptic pandemic parable, “Blindness,” which debuted earlier this year at Cannes and Bruce McDonald’s horror zombie film, “Pontypool,” which we may or may not have reported when we met him at the NY debut of “The Tracey Fragements.’

Canadian films added to the fest (naturally) include, Warren Sonoda’s “Coopers’ Camera” and Justin Simms’ “Down to the Dirt” and Atom Egoyan’s “Adoration,” but the cerebral Armenian/Canuck is Canadian royalty and they’d save a spot to screen his wet farts if it came down to it (the film is about a youth who reinvents himself in “cyberspace,” it premiered at Cannes ’08 and it stars Scott Speedman).

The new trailer for “Blindness,” José Saramago’s 1995 apocalyptic-like story of a worldwide epidemic robbing people of their sight is online and it looks tentatively pretty powerful and engrossing. Directed by Fernando Meirelles (“City of God,” “The Constant Gardener,”) the picture was the opening film at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this May and opens in North America on September 19.

The adaptation written by Canadian filmmaker, Don Mckellar, the film stars Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover, Gael García Bernal, Alica Braga and Julianne Moore as the only person immune to the epidemic of blindness.

Is Jonah Hill going to be in “Transformers 2” as Shia LeBouf’s bff? Maybe he can cockpunch him for us while on set. Of course Michael Bay is claiming all the new casting information is blatant misinformation, but he would say that. [EW]

As expected, Fernando Meirelles’ “Blindness” (with Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo; Meirelles directed “City of God”) will open up the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. Barry Levinson’s “What Just Happened,” starring Robert De Niro, will close the festival May 25.
