We only have a few more days to wait before we’ll see if any film or person can pull off a major upset (in any category) and beat out “La La Land” which, last time we checked, was tracking to pick up more Oscars on Sunday than there are categories. It seems mathematically impossible, but that’s the magic of the movies for you. One of the most hotly contested, though, is Best Actress — a category which Emma Stone seems to be steamrolling her way through to victory.

The film follows Uxbal (Bardem) — who can communicate with the dead, has an uneasy relationship with his bi-polar ex-wife and is juggling a handful of slowly spiraling black market deals — in his last days as he tries to set things right before he passes away from terminal cancer.

Mexico Selects Alejandro González Iñárritu’s ‘Biutiful’ As Their Foreign Film Entry, Will Get Limited Release On Dec. 29

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Biutiful” has received an awards season bump as Mexico has selected the film to be their contender in the foreign film Oscar race.

The film which began its festival circuit this spring, played to a mixed reception at Cannes, but most critics could agree that Javier Bardem’s performance was one of his best yet (he took home the Best Actor award from the festival). We called it “impeccably acted, wonderfully shot and assuredly put together,” but also a thematically muddled and depressing “slog.” The film follows Uxbal (Bardem) — who can communicate with the dead, has an uneasy relationship with his bi-polar ex-wife and is juggling a handful of slowly spiraling black market deals — in his last days as he tries to set things right before he passes away from terminal cancer.

The Telluride Film Festival, taking place over the upcoming Labor Day weekend, has unveiled their lineup and those lucky enough to make it out to the tiny ski resort town are in for a treat.

As previously hinted, Peter Weir’s highly anticipated “The Way Back” will be making its world premiere at the festival. Starring Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Mark Strong and Saoirse Ronan, the film centers on a group of seven prisoners who escape a Siberian labor camp in 1940 and attempt to trek thousands of miles across hostile terrain to India and their freedom.

Confirmed: Roadside Attractions Acquires Alejandro González Iñárritu’s ‘Biutiful’; December Release Date Planned

Following rumors that floated earlier this month, Roadside Attractions have officially announced that they have partnered with Liddell Entertainment and acquired the U.S. rights to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Biutiful” starring Javier Bardem.

Iñárritu’s first film without longtime collaborator Guillermo Arriaga earned mixed reviews on the Croisette, where we described it as an “impeccably acted, wonderfully shot and assuredly put together” film that was, conversely, a two hour and twenty minute “slog.” Harrowing and depressing as hell, it has understandably struggled to find a distribution deal stateside.

Small, indie distribution house Roadside Attractions are reportedly set to pick up North American distribution rights to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Biutiful” starring Javier Bardem, months after the film premiered at Cannes.

Iñárritu’s first film without longtime collaborator Guillermo Arriaga earned mixed reviews on the Croisette, where we described it as an “impeccably acted, wonderfully shot and assuredly put together” film. However, as a harrowing, depressing Spanish-language slog, it has understandably struggled to find a distribution deal stateside.

Other than a brief 45 second promo clip during Cannes, “Biutiful,” the first film from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu since 2006’s “Babel,” has remained pretty firmly under wraps, despite premiering at Cannes back in May. The drama, starring Javier Bardem as a black market trader suffering from terminal cancer now finally has an international trailer, courtesy of UK distributors Optimum Releasing and Empire.

It’s a very strong clip (despite pulling the old let’s-hide-that-the-film-is-subtitled switcheroo), brilliantly edited and full of some stunning imagery.

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Biutiful,” his first film following the rupture with longtime collaborator and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival to largely mixed reviews. While Javier Bardem earned near-universal praise for his performance, the film failed to resonate on the Croisette. We called it “impeccably acted, wonderfully shot and assuredly put together,” but also a thematically muddled and depressing “slog.” The film follows Uxbal — who can communicate with the dead, has an uneasy relationship with his bi-polar ex-wife and is juggling a handful of slowly spiraling black market deals — in his last days as he tries to set things right before he passes away from terminal cancer (yeah, that’s the reason Bardem looks positively beat up on the pictured poster).

One of the biggest questions we heard on the Croisette this year was, who was going to win? With an In Competition year that was regarded by many as the weakest at Cannes in decades, it seemed to be a guessing game who would emerge victorious from a relatively unremarkable pack of films.

Well, the winners have been announced, and while for the most part it’s pretty much everything we would’ve expected, Tim Burton and the rest of the jury saved the biggest surprise for the top honor.

An early promo trailer has been unveiled of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Cannes entry “Biutiful.”

The film stars Javier Bardem as Uxbal, a former drug addict living in the fringes of Barcelona, Spain who has cancer and only two months to live. Amplifying his problems are, of course, his two kids, a part-time prostitute ex-wife who suffers from bipolar, African immigrants, gay Chinese lovers who supply his bootleg goods and his touchy relationship with a crooked cop.

Sony Pictures Classics Buys Mike Leigh’s ‘Another Year,’ ‘Biutiful’ Still Anxiously Awaiting A Distrib

Though some have called it miserablist, slow, etc. while others have seemingly dug its take on contentment and togetherness, either way, Mike Leigh’s Cannes picture, “Another Year” has been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.

We always kind of assumed this was a Focus Features picture, since Focus Features International financed it, but that’s not always how it works. While some have been harsh on SPC in recent years —perhaps for not making “Moon” the big tentpole film they thought it should be (guys, it’s thinking man’s sci-fi, it has limited appeal) —the distributor is pretty perfect for the Leigh film, as they pretty much exclusively work with intelligent foreign films.

Cannes 2010 Review: Alejandro González Iñárritu’s ‘Biutiful’ Is Impeccably Acted And Wonderfully Shot But Isn’t Particularly Interesting

Following Alejandro González Iñárritu’s acrimonious split with writing partner and collaborator Guillermo Arriaga, he arrives at Cannes this year with something to prove. Arriaga’s recently made his directorial solo debut with the poorly received “The Burning Plain.” Featuring his now trademark narrative time jumping — already displayed with diminishing returns in “Amores Perros,” “21 Grams” and “Babel” — the film failed to catch the fire the way his previous works with Innaritu did. And unfortunately, Innaritu looks like he will be met with the same fate.

The 2010 Cannes Film Festival kicks off today, and yes, The Playlist will be in attendance again this year (though we don’t arrive until the weekend – no point in flying early to see “Robin Hood”). As we scour the schedules, get packed and get the details in place before we hit the Riviera this weekend we’ve highlighted the ten films we’re eager to see. Once we got over the absence of Terrence Malick’s highly anticipated “Tree Of Life,” we realized there is still a lot to look forward to this year.
