While the post-apocalyptic film subgenre seems to focus on the world after a catastrophic event (thus “post”), some of the best scenes in those films are when you get to see the tension and suspense of watching the world descend into panic. And apparently, Netflix has focused on that time when crafting the new “Bird Box” spinoff film, ‘Barcelona.’

As seen in the teaser for “Bird Box Barcelona,” the film follows the events immediately after the world becomes aware of the monsters on Earth that will infect the minds of people and force them to kill themselves when they look into their eyes.

Sure, it’s been overshadowed in more recent years, but it’s hard to discount the massive hit that Netflix had with “Bird Box” in late-2018. Within 28 days of release, the Sandra Bullock horror film skyrocketed in viewership becoming the most-viewed film in Netflix’s history. Over time, it would be unseated by “Red Notice” (2021) and “Don’t Look Up” (2021), but the film still ranks at #3 all-time, which is crazy for a film that was released more than four years ago.

FX CEO John Landgraf is one of the more outspoken TV execs out there. He’s never been shy with offering his opinion on the state of the TV marketplace, and honestly, his “takes” are pretty spot-on, most of the time. Of course, we always have to take what he says with a modicum of salt, just based on the inherent bias he carries, representing FX. However, with the recent headlines that Netflix has garnered based on their outlandish “ratings” for programs like “Sex Education,” “You,” and the film “Bird Box,” Landgraf is ready to set the record straight.”

Based on the fact that streamers like to measure the number of video starts, not the average audience, Landgraf said, at a recent TCA event (via THR), the claims by Netflix are “not remotely accurate representation of a long-form program performance.”

Bringing some data to back up his claim, Landgraf said that “You,” which Netflix has claimed to be watched by over 40 million users, isn’t the massive, world-dominating hit the streaming service would like you to believe.

Netflix isn’t very transparent when it comes to the numbers and viewership side of their business, and it’s hard to blame them. Once movie studios let the cat out of the bag in the 1980s and started reporting box office numbers to tout their massive successes, they also left themselves open and vulnerable to journalists discussing their flops, their financial losses, and failures. Which is why movie studios aren’t always fully transparent when it comes to budgets, promotion and advertising costs and more, the media already knows enough and turning a profit for a big studio movie tends to be actually extremely difficult when you factor in the cut theaters take and international studios that release the films abroad.

Netflix has succumbed to awards season pressure and is finally doing the right thing. Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” will be released in theaters before hitting the streaming service. This is a major change from the day and date model Netflix has used in the past for films such as “Mudbound” and “Private Life.”  In a surprise, however, it’s not the only awards-worthy film getting a traditional theatrical release.  The Coen Brothers’ “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and Susanne Bier’s “Bird Box” will also receive in theater runs before hitting Netflix worldwide.

It’s hard to believe that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have only been working together on film scores since 2010’s “The Social Network.” Of course, that collaboration got off to an incredible start, as the duo won the Oscar for their work on the David Fincher film. Since then, they’ve put together an incredible filmography of scores, with works like “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Gone Girl,” “Patriots Day,” and most recently on Jonah Hill’s directorial debut “mid90s.” And it looks like Reznor and Ross aren’t stopping anytime soon, as they line up a new Netflix film, an HBO series, and the latest project from filmmaker Joe Wright.

And given that line-up, they have a strong shot at the Oscars this year (aside from documentaries where they’ve always been strong), perhaps for the first time ever (“Beasts Of No Nation,” their first shot at a Best Picture contender in 2015 was a non-starter).
