‘BioShock’: Netflix Enlists Director Francis Lawrence & ‘Logan’ Screenwriter Michael Green To Adapt Sci-Fi Horror Video Game

Netflix is developing a live-action film based on the “BioShock” video game franchise. A previous incarnation had been a passion project for filmmaker Gore Verbinski (“Pirates of The Caribbean“) but eventually dissolved before this latest version of the film surfaced. The streaming service has found its writer and director for the sci-fi horror mash-up project.

It’s been revealed by Deadline that Francis Lawrence has been hired to direct “BioShock” with Michael Green (“Logan,” “Blade Runner 2049“) tasked to pen the script.

Every so often, someone, usually Roger Ebert, writes something suggesting that videogames can never be classified as an art form, and the internet goes batshit crazy. Whichever side you’re on (and we don’t really care either way), it’s hard to argue that games will get the respect that their advocates crave without growing up a bit; the vast, vast majority of the industry’s output is still incredibly adolescent, confusing ‘adult’ with ‘boobs and gore.’

But one of the few examples that manage to transcend this is the immensely successful game “Bioshock” and its recent sequel.

We’ve had a certain fondness for Gore Verbinski ever since his debut with the above-average kids flick “Mousehunt” in 1998. He’s perhaps overly indebted to Burton and Gilliam, but is arguably more technically adept than either, and, while he’s yet to make a great film, even the worst of his work has something to recommend it (James Gandolfini’s performance in “The Mexican,” some of the smaller, Python-esque moments in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”).

Clive Owen & Daniel Brühl To Star In Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s ‘Intruders’

With “Bioshock” seemingly stuck in development hell, “28 Weeks Later” director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has moved on to his to next project, the English language thriller “Intruders.”

Starring Clive Owen and Daniel Brühl (“Inglourious Basterds”), the film “revolves around an 11-year-old girl who is forced to confront childhood demons.” Obviously, the child actor hasn’t been cast yet, but with a June shoot currently scheduled for London and Madrid we expect the rest of the cast and details on the project will be revealed soon.

Samantha Morton, Dominic West and Polly Walker have all joined Andrew Stanton’s “John Carter Of Mars.” The Disney project will chronicle the story of a Civil War veteran (Taylor Kitsch) who is mysteriously transported to Mars and becomes involved with the hostile environments. Lynn Collins and Willem Dafoe also star. [THR]

Joan Jett and Jackie Fox from the all-girl rock band The Runaways are in the midst of an ugly court battle which sees Jett suing Fox for trying to claim compensation on The Runaways’ name.

Tobey Maguire and Anne Hathaway are set to star in “Tokyo Suckerpunch,” — no, not a Japanese version of Zack Snyder’s similarly titled film —a project described by it’s scribe, Ed Solomon, as a “a lot of action, but mostly comedy set in Tokyo, about a guy who thinks he’s in love with one woman.” The film is based on a novel by Isaac Adamson.

“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” director Gavin Hood has confirmed earlier reports that the theatrical version of his film will not differ significantly to the leaked workprint. Hood noted that the leaked version had 400 unfinished visual effects shots, no score, unfinished sound mixing and unfinished coloring but failed to mention the key scenes that were previously claimed to be missing by Fox chairman Tim Rothman.

Hood did reveal though that the film will feature multiple secret ‘easter egg’ endings.

We thought the film version of Dungeons and Dragons might be the last time Hollywood looked to role playing games for awhile, but if there’s anyone who can bring RPGs (Role Playing Games) to the masses, surely it is the man who helped turn a Disney ride into a billion dollar franchise.

Variety reports that Gore Verbinski (‘The Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Extra Nacho Cheese franchise)will direct and co-produce an adaptation of a 2007 Wall Street Journal article on the subject.
