The Atlanta native was snubbed for her celebrated performance in 2022’s “Till,” but that likely won’t happen this season. Assuming enough members watch “The Piano Lesson” – a major assumption – Deadwyler may be the safest nominee in a Supporting Actress Oscars class that is more wide open than it might initially seem. And there is a familiar reason why.

Not only has Azazel Jacobs‘ sublime drama ended up as one of the most acclaimed films released in 2024, but it had a very strong debut on Netflix this past weekend, landing at no. 5 on the streamer’s movie top 10 list in less than a week of views.

The two-time Emmy and SAG Award winner is heartbreaking as a mother reuniting with her now adult son in Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” (still one of the best-reviewed movies of 2023). But despite a Gotham Award, British Independent Film Award, and London Film Film Critics Circle nomination, she’s been somewhat ignored by American critics for “flashier” performances.

Even after hours of interviews, some in person, some on Zoom, they were still genuinely engaged, and, in general, that isn’t always the case. It doesn’t hurt that William Oldroyd’s “Eileen,” adapted by Ottessa Moshfegh from her own novel, gives both actors two of their most tantalizing roles in years.

There are two very likely nominees, Emily Blunt who is searching for her first nomination ever for “Oppenheimer” and Danielle Brooks, who is bringing her Tony Award-nominated turn in the musical version of “The Color Purple” to the big screen. The final three slots “seem” so wide open we could be in for an entertaining campaign if the SAG strike ends with enough time before voting begins (fingers crossed).

A landmark and sobering moment for the film industry.

And the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony Award winner is more than worthy of what would be her seventh Academy Award nomination.

“At no point did I ever consider that I would be kind of given the chance to do it.

We’re going with BAFTA winner Rachel Weisz. The instinct is to predict Regina King, who earned an Oscar nod after getting snubbed by BAFTA and SAG, but there is huge concern enough members haven’t seen “Beale Street.” King could still win based on her reputation in the industry and the fact she won numerous critics groups awards. Amy Adams now has six nominations without a win.
