Awards season quickly approaches. And one of the hottest films expected to make a push later this year is “September 5.” The period thriller about the ABC Sports crew that covered the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis was picked up by Paramount Pictures and will make it into theaters in November, with an expected wider release in December. Reviews for the movie have been very positive thus far, with The Hollywood Reporter calling it “an enlightening, altogether gripping experience.” There have been comparisons to similarly compelling newsroom dramas like “All the President’s Men” and “Spotlight.”

Like those films mentioned, particular praise may appear in the form of Oscar nominations early next year.

HBO’s “The Nevers” drops at a time when its existence will have to fight a more intense battle than anything on-screen against the stories about its creator, Joss Whedon. While the man behind “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” and “Dollhouse” left the show in November as stories about his on-set behavior on “Justice League” were just starting to surface, his fingerprints are all over the four episodes of the new series.

About a young aspiring actor (a surprisingly decent Zac Efron) who randomly lands a theater gig of “Julius Caesar,” with pre-movie fame but still renowned Orson Welles. We wonder what compels a filmmaker to tell a story like this.
Not because it’s bad, but the story — set in the mid-’30s, must have felt like a nice period-piece change of pace.
