Sometimes a film will play at a festival and almost immediately get a theatrical or digital release. However, what often happens is that an indie film plays a variety of festivals and it takes a little while for it to land distribution. That’s the case for the new film, “Beats,” but as can be seen in the new trailer, the film is well worth the wait.

“Beats” tells the story of a couple of friends that come together due to their mutual love of electronic music and their inherent rebellious attitudes.

Gang violence and police brutality towards African American people seem to be topics that won’t go away, especially in a city like Chicago. Netflix aims to tackle those issues, bringing along a healthy dose of music and a classic coming-of-age tale, with its newest film “Beats.”

In the first trailer for “Beats,” we learn that the story follows a young teenager that has been the victim of violence, including an incident that ended with his sister being shot and killed.

There is not now, nor is there likely ever to be, a shortage of films highlighting the awkward, confusing, and restrictive nature of teenage life. Whether it’s “The Breakfast Club” or “Ladybird”; it’s a well-covered topic spanning generations, locations, and cultures. In many ways, “Beats” is no different in this regard, yet the new Scottish film, executive produced by Slamdance alumni Steven Soderbergh, both incorporates as well as transcends the classic tropes of the genre to tap into a menacing undercurrent that lives just beneath the surface of these stories.
