Tomorrow morning, the Oscar nominations will be announced, but as is tradition, the folks at the Razzie Awards are riding the Academy’s coattails. The group has issued their nominations for the worst that 2017 had to offer, and everyone will argue about these entirely meaningless and pretty dumb awards anyway.

Certainly, you can’t debate their selections for Worst Picture: “Baywatch,” “The Emoji Movie,” “Fifty Shades Darker,” “The Mummy,” “Transformers: The Last Knight” (which earned the most nods with nine) were indeed all regrettable pictures.

In case you somehow missed it, the hubbub yesterday was reported talk of studios considering eliminating critic screenings because “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales“ underperformed (domestically) and “Baywatch” bellyflopped in cinemas, and were scorched on Rotten Tomatoes. Both received negative scores — 31% for the former, a brutal 18% for the latter. The irony is that Dwayne Johnson tweeted in defense of his movie (and its poor Rotten Tomatoes score) only a few days before it hit theaters, saying that snooty critics were out of touch.

Call it coincidence, but today The Playlist spent some time around the watercooler talking about Rotten Tomatoes, and more specifically, it’s cruel system that makes critics choose from a binary choice between Fresh or Rotten when submitting their reviews. It means that something like “Wonder Woman,” which we had issues with an issued a C+ grade comes out as Fresh, or Noah Baumbach‘s “The Meyerowitz Stories,” given a B- grade, coming out as Rotten.

Box-office prognosticators love to scrutinize why audiences don’t turn out for a movie, citing familiar theories like “franchise fatigue” or tossing around the notion that everyone is staying at home watching Netflix. Sometimes, the truth is as simple as moviegoers being able to smell a turkey from a long way off. It would certainly explain what happened to two big studio pictures opening this Memorial Day weekend.

Disney‘s $230 million-costing sequel “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” (32% on Rotten Tomatoes) opened with $62 million domestic, which on paper, certainly sounds like a nice figure.
