Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn is at the 20224 Venice Film Festival for two purposes: he’s promoting A restored version of his 1996 drug/crime drama debut “Pusher “is screening, and so his “Beauty Is Not a Sin,” a seven-minute commercial for Italian motorcycle company MV Agusta. The film’s tagline is “Who said a movie can’t be seven minutes long?”

While in Venice, Refn spoke to the trades and gave several updates.

This one has seemingly been in the wind for a while as a rumor or wishlist, but it seems to have panned out regardless. “Baby Driver” filmmaker Edgar Wright is in talks to direct Sydney Sweeney in the long-gestating remake of “Barbarella.” The “Euphoria” star has been attached to the project since 2022, but there’s been little movement on it, other than a desire to make it, until now.

‘Barbarella’: Sydney Sweeney To Star In Sony’s Remake Of The Sci-Fi Classic

When you think of the film “Barbarella,” it’s almost impossible to think of anyone else other than Jane Fonda. The actress is synonymous with the character, thanks in large part to her costuming in the film. Well, it appears Sony is ready for a new “Barbarella,” and the studio has a star it thinks is perfectly suited for the sci-fi adventure.

The Hollywood Reporter released the news late night that a remake of “Barbarella” is in production. Like, seriously in production, with a writer, Joe Gazzam (no discernible credits to date), and a director, Robert Luketic (“Legally Blonde,” “Monster-In-Law,” “The Ugly Truth” uhh….). The remake was originally intended as a vehicle for Rose McGowen with Robert Rodriguez attached to direct, but after that went to hell in a hand basket when someone decided to go in a new direction and get a major chick flick director on board.

When will Harry AICN learn to editorialize their content? No wonder /Film is overtaking them in the film blogosphere. We digress. Buried in the bottom of Harry Knowles‘ piece about Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming sci-fi thriller, “Nerveracker,” due April, 2010, is mention of what’s next.

“Sin City 2”? “Barbarella”? “Red Sonja”? Any other number of rumored projects that Rodriguez has had on his plate over the last few years?

Nope, the almost long-forgotten adaptations of “The Jetsons,” talk of which began around 2007.
