Over the past year, The Playlist has covered hundreds of prestige films and TV series. We’ve even gone ahead and broke them down and ranked them in our various Best of 2021 lists. This year, we’ve absolutely adored the works of filmmakers like Jane Campion, Pedro Almodovar, Rebecca Hall, Paul Thomas Anderson, and many, many more.  But, let’s be real, in our second pandemic-filled year, sometimes you have to watch some garbage from time to time.

With the bonkers comedy “Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar,” director Josh Greenbaum proved that he has the chops for ridiculous studio comedies, allowing leads Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo the wiggle-room to just go balls-out silly.

And thanks to the success of that film, Greenbaum already has a follow-up all lined up. Titled, “Strays” the comedy will feature comedic heavyweights with Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, and Will Forte, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

If there is one industry union that has taste, style, and, yes, a sense of humor, it’s the Costume Designers Guild. For example, with this year’s 2021 Costume Design Guild Awards they nominated such worth films as “Promising Young Woman,” “Birds of Prey,” “Emma” and “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Oh, and how could we forget, the indomitable “Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar.”

Without a collective audience to conjure the contagiousness of enjoyable, transmissible theatrical laughter, without instantaneous stand-up reaction and feedback loop to tell comedians what’s funny, without much direction or togetherness, humorists are left to their own insulated devices, their own peculiar observations, and their idiosyncratic penchant for what they find amusing.

There’s a decent mix of awards hopefuls, feel-good romances, and experimental indie films in the mix, with trilogy finales, directorial debuts, and knock-out performances from Anthony Hopkins and Daniel Kaluuya to look forward to.

We have now seen a teaser and a trailer for the upcoming comedy film, “Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar,” and for the life of me, I really can’t tell you what it’s about. I mean, the short answer is obvious, the film stars Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo as the title characters who, uh, go to Vista Del Mar. But other than that, the film remains a mystery.
