Tonight brings the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ annual awards ceremony, one of the final events of the season, and one of the last major indicators of which way the Oscars may end up going. Because our ticket to the awards, um, mysteriously never arrived, and because Britain is yet to join the 21st century and televise its award ceremonies (an edited version starts airing at 9pm GMT), we’re going to update the winners as we get them, and then liveblog the ceremony.

England just announced the winners for their version of the Academy Awards, the BAFTAS, and surprise, surprise, “Slumdog Millionaire” was once again the film that couldn’t be beat! In fact, it would’ve swept the entire show, raking in 7 wins, if it hadn’t been for ‘Benjamin Button’ snatching 3 technical awards. We wonder, could this be the outcome for the Oscars in a few weeks? Quite possibly, as the Baftas have become more and more a predictor for the Oscars over the years.

The BAFTA nominations are in. They’re obviously the equivalent of the British Oscars, if you happen to be living under a rock. Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” and David Fincher’s “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button” lead the nominees with eleven nods each. The British love their own, expect Boyle to sweep, but as one astute commenter reminds us, “If the British love their own, where is Sally Hawkins?” Hmm, indeed. Consider her a major snub.

The British Academy Film Awards released their longlist for the top films of 2008, and Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon” and David Fincher’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” came out of top, with 14 nominations each.

Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The Reader,” “Revolutionary Road,” “Changling” and “The Dark Knight” each scored 13 nominations apiece while Gus Van Sants “Milk,” and the Coens Brothers demented comedy, “Burn After Reading” came away with 11.

While some Oscar contending films were buried in nominations, others went a little under the radar.

The British loving a British film? Not a huge surprise, but “Atonement” has led a bumpy award season life with tons of accolades and then tons of major snubs. We still think (and hope) it’s not going to do well come Oscar nom time. The WWII epic picked up fourteen BAFTA (British Film and Television Awards) nominations today (January 16) including Best Picture and Best Male and Female Lead (they liked the film so much they nominated it twice – once for Best Film and one for Best British film cause one nod wasn’t enough – the full list).
