If you were looking for the BAFTA Awards to provide some surprises this Oscar season, you will be sorely disappointed. As expected, “Oppenheimer” dominated the night taking Best Film, Director (Christopher Nolan), Lead Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey, Jr.), Original Score (Ludwig Göransson), Cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), and Editing (Jennifer Lame).

Awards Season finally has some twists and turns to contend with before the Oscar nominations are revealed on Tuesday. Today, the 2024 BATA Awards nominations were revealed and snubs and surprises were almost everywhere. The big news, however, was that Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” led all films with 13 nominations followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 11.

Those two films were joined in the five-nominee Best Film category by Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Justin Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” and, in a surprise, Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers.”

Overall, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Zone of Interest” each scored nine nominations, but the former saw both Scorsese and Lily Gladstone snubbed in Best Director and Lead Actress.

They aren’t always completely indicative of where The Academy is leaning, but, often, the BAFTA Awards longlists are better early indicators of potential Oscar nominations (and winners) than the BAFTA Awards nominations themselves. In that respect, the 2024 BAFTA Awards longlists are a very good sign for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” Each of those films had 15 mentions, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 14.

The Directors Guild had their award season say on Saturday night, but a little over 12 hours later the BAFTA Film Awards handed out their 2023 honors. Broadcast in the U.S. in a bizarre “we’re not live until the last four honors” set up on Britbox, the big winner of the night was Edward Berger’s “All Quiet on the Western Front.” The Netflix release stunned winning Best Film as well as six other honors including Best Director, the Film Not in the English Language honor, Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Sound, and Original Score.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced their always informative Longlists early this morning and it was good and bad news for a number of Oscar contenders. While the BAFTA Awards always have their own distinctly United Kingdom-based favorites, the organization has a genuine overlap with AMPAS members. The BAFTA choices should always be looked at as the direction AMPAS members may be heading with their individual Oscar votes. This year, the good news was in the “All Quiet On the Western Front” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” camps which led all films with 15 and 14 mentions respectively.

The Oscar nominations are just a few days away, but early this morning BAFTA revealed their nominees for the 2022 British Academy Film Awards. And, as in recent years, they served as an indicator of where AMPAS members may throw their ballots. In something of a surprise, “Dune” lead all films with 11 nominations including Best Film.

Is there room for upsets at the Oscars? That depends on how you categorize an upset. In theory, Chadwick Boseman is still the locked frontrunner to take the Best Actor prize at the Academy Awards in two weeks, but Anthony Hopkins pulled off something of a surprise winning the equivalent honor at the 2021 BAFTA Awards. Does that put Boseman’s posthumous honor from the Oscars in doubt? Unlikely.

There are four major bellwethers for the Academy Awards. The SAG Awards, the PGA Awards, the DGA Awards, and, increasingly, the BAFTA Awards. The Academy, which governs the Oscars, is made up primarily of the aforementioned guilds. Over the past decade, however, there has been more overlap in membership between AMPAS and its British counterpart than decades past. That’s why today’s announcement of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards was so provocative.

The 92nd Academy Awards are just a week away, but the other film academy across the pond got a chance to have their say in the awards game as the 2020 BAFTA Awards were handed out in London. Universal Pictures’ “1917” dominated the proceedings winning Best Film and Best Director, Sam Mendes. The WW I thriller is a frontrunner to win both awards at the Oscars next Sunday.

“1917” also won Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, Best Production Design and Best British Film.

Back in 2016, the world was introduced to the #OscarsSoWhite campaign on social media, after the awards show nominations were announced and no People of Color were nominated in the acting categories. Since then, the Academy Awards has included more diversity in the nominations, after the embarrassment of that year. Now, it appears that it’s the BAFTAs’ turn to feel the heat.

After the recent announcement of the 2020 BAFTA award nominations, with 20 acting nominations going to all white people (Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie scored two each), Twitter wasted no time before the #BAFTAsSoWhite campaign began.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts revealed the nominees for the 2020 BAFTA Awards early Tuesday morning in London and there were some serious snubs and surprises.  Todd Phillips “Joker” led all films with 11 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix).  “The Irishman” and “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” each earned 10 nominations while “1917” earned nine and “Jojo Rabbit” took six.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for the 2019 EE BAFTA Awards early Wednesday morning and their clear cut favorite was Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.”  The Fox Searchlight and Film 4 production earned 12 nods including Best Film, Director (Lanthimos), Lead Actress (Olivia Colman), Original Screenplay and two Supporting Actress nods (Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz), among others.  “Roma” landed seven nods including Best Film, Best Director (Alfonso Cuaron), Original Screenplay (Cuaron) and Editing (Cuaron), among others.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for the 2019 BAFTA Awards Rising Star this morning and there were some familiar and, well, established names among the mix. The five standouts include Lakeith Stanfield, Letitia Wright, Jessie Buckley, Cynthia Erivo and Barry Keoghan.    

First handed out in 2006, previous winners have included James McAvoy, Eva Green, Shia LaBeouf, Kristen Stewart, John Boyega and Tom Holland.
