Despite being just the weirdest year ever, it’s also been a super-strong, solid one for television. Maybe it’s because movies got kneecapped during the pandemic or maybe it’s because we’re all stuck at home more than ever, but there’s definitely lots of good TV to watch, including our picks for the 20 best shows of 2020 at the halfway point, which didn’t even include August’s acclaimed “Lovecraft Country.”

Space dramas normally come in a couple of different flavors. There’s the “Ad Astra” style where the drama overtakes the space aspect of it. Then you have something like “Interstellar,”which focuses on spectacle over story (Sorry, Nolan fans). But what If you wanted even less space and more drama than either of those? That’s where you get “Away.”

As seen in the trailer for “Away,” Netflix’s new space drama series starring Hilary Swank feels like the lovechild of “First Man” and “This is Us.” Sure, it has a good cast and looks like it’s going to have some really decent spectacle, but the clear focus of the series is on the human drama about people from all sorts of walks of life that are chosen for the first manned mission to Mars that will take them from their respective families for three years.

Despite the strange, undeserving box office and awards failure of Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” astronaut movie with Ryan Gosling—a terrific film that should’ve been a solid awards contender—studios don’t seem too scared off by the genre yet. In fact, Gosling is taking another kick at the genre with directors Lord and Miller, AppleTV+ got into the game with their own show “For All Mankind,” and next up, boldly going into the unpredictable field is Netflix.
