During the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige announced big news about the unofficially titled “Avengers 5.” We now know the film will be called “Avengers: Doomsday” and will still arrive on May 1, 2026. Additionally, the Russo Brothers are confirmed as the directors.

But the real showstopper was the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will play Doctor Doom, a notorious villain from “The Fantastic Four.” Incidentally, the Fantastic Four team has been confirmed to appear in ‘Doomsday’ and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” and if you’ve paid attention, you know we’ve mentioned this RDJ/Doom rumor before.

Having left Marvel Studios to create their own studio, AGBO, and released their own blockbusters like “The Gray Man,” it was thought the Russos had graduated and moved on to focus on their own IP.

Wow. Just wow. While the Russo Brothers seemingly graduated and left Marvel Studios to start their own AGBO company, it appears they are not done with Marvel films just yet—not by a long shot.

According to THR, the Russo Brothers are in talks to helm both ‘Avengers 5’ and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” This is obviously going to be very popular amongst the fandom, as the Russos did no wrong behind the lens of their four previous Marvel films (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame”).

In a big show of confidence about the hopes for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” set to hit theaters in July and maybe save summer 2024 from the box-office doldrums, its director Shawn Levy (“Free Guy”) is apparently the first in line to be offered “Avengers 5,” formerly known as “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” According to Deadline, Levy has emerged as the top choice for the director’s chair, and apparently ‘Avengers 5” screenwriter Michael Waldron (“Loki”) has given him the latest version of the script for his eyes only.

Marvel Studios has been facing many difficulties with its next “Avengers” installment following the departure of director Destin Daniel Cretton, who left to focus on other Marvel projects (“Wonder Man” and the “Shang Chi” sequel). Screenwriter Jeff Loveness exited as well, but none of that really compares to the firing of Jonathan Majors, who was set to play the film’s villain, Kang The Conqueror, and let go after he was convicted in connection to a violent altercation with his ex-girlfriend (now awaiting sentencing that will be handed down in April).
