Another day, another Netflix YA teen film announced. Clearly the algorithms indicate that this genre does extremely well for the streaming service because they keep greenlighting them hand over fist. What makes this new one slightly more interesting, “All Together Now,” is that it stars Auli’i Cravalho, the star of Disney’s “Moana.” Obviously, Cravalho, an unknown Hawaiian native at the time, played the character in animation, but she also sang many of the now-iconic songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina, and Opetaia Foa’i, and as the Oscars that year proved: her voice is fierce and no fucking joke.

Last night, audiences experienced (were subjected to?) the latest primetime musical special, ABC’s “The Little Mermaid Live.” However, unlike other recent entries in this genre, such as “Grease” and “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” the ABC production decided to go with the mixed-media approach, relying on animated bits from the classic 1989 film combined with live-action musical numbers with a new cast including Queen Latifah, Auli’i Cravalho, John Stamos, and Shaggy, among others.

Well, that was certainly an Oscar ceremony. A long and relatively safe Oscar season looked to be culminating in a long and relatively safe evening, until a perfect storm of human error led to an unforgettable/mortifying/thrilling moment of live TV, and one weirdly fitting for a time in human history when everything seems to have gone bugnuts crazy.

It’s destined to be a ceremony remembered for being the one where two Best Picture winners were announced, but as ever, there were plenty of highs and lows beyond that, so beyond, you’ll find the Worst & Best of the 2017 Academy Awards (leading with worst, because, well, there’s some big stuff we’d have to get to first).
