In 2003, he was one of the three prestigious video filmmakers who led the inaugural launch of the Director’s Label DVD series. The other two directors, Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry, obviously had nascent film careers already starting to take off, and essentially became household names (relatively speaking of course) instead of just buzzed-about names for hipsters, indie-film-fans in the know. And so everyone basically expected Cunningham to follow suit and tear up the film world.

His “Iran So Far” SNL digital short – a satirical love letter to Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – this past weekends samples a piano line from Aphex Twin’s “Avril 14th” from Drukqs, which was also featured in Sophia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette.” The digital short also features Maroon 5’s Adam Levine who sings the hook.

Andy Samberg, Maroon 5, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Aphex Twin, bet you thought those four worlds would have never collided.
