If there is one core intrigue at the heart of the science-fiction franchise “Star Trek,” it is the thrill that comes from the exploration of new galaxies, lavish worlds, and fascinating alien species. Inside everyone is the drive “to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

If the show’s title is any indication, then the upcoming “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” from Paramount+ will be going all into that fascination.

While Marvel might deliver one hit after another on the big screen, when it comes to TV the results have been mixed, to put it generously. The various series have varied wildly in quality, and this year in particular has been a disappointment for fans, with “Iron Fist” missing the mark, and the upcoming “The Defenders” generating low heat. However, nothing compares to the arrows being fired at “Inhumans.”

The ABC series has dismayed fans with the first trailers, and an early review of the first episode (which will be shown in IMAX cinemas) tore the show to shreds, and went viral as a result.

Marvel has an interesting track record when it comes to TV. Put simply, their network shows tend to be mediocre and skippable (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, “Agent Carter”) while their cable and streaming shows have generally — with the primary exception of “Iron Fist” — been zeitgeisty and critically well received (“Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “Legion.”)

Well, this fall Marvel will once again be venturing into network television with the new ABC series “Marvel’s Inhumans,” about a royal family of superheroes.

First Look Image Of The Cast Of Marvel’s ‘Inhumans’

With the corridor-punching Netflix franchises teaming up for this summer’s “The Defenders,” Marvel’s TV efforts are moving into a new phase, and they won’t be short of projects. Freeform’s “Cloak & Dagger” and comedy “New Warriors,” Hulu’s “The Runaways,” “X-Men”-related “Gifted” on Fox, and a Netflix “Punisher” spin-off are all set to debut in the next year or so, but the biggest gamble to date, quite literally, might come with ABC‘s “Inhumans.”

Until not so long ago, the property — about a royal family of superheroes — was set to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a movie scheduled to debut towards the end of Phase Three.
