This is probably not the way Variety wanted to start 2010. This morning it was announced that Nikki Finke’s Deadline/Hollywood has poached one of Variety’s best scoopers, Mike Fleming, to handle the New York branch of the website.

Variety, at one time an important industry read, has had a long slide in the past couple of years into irrelevance with a waning readership and tired content. In the last month, they have implemented a misguided paywall strategy for their website which would make sense if they actually had anything to report.

A new poster for John Hillcoat’s “The Road” has been, errr… sorta premiered. A bit odd but, either the image has been cut off (likely) taking out the head of its lead, Viggo Mortensen, or the studio thinks Kodi Smit-McPhee’s unknown mug alone will be able to sell this already mis-marketed picture. [DaemonsMovies]

Sam Taylor-Wood’s “Nowhere Boy” — the story of John Lennon’s early days starring Aaron Johnson — will close this year’s BFI London Film Festival which will be opened by Wes Anderson’s “The Fantastic Mr.

Ok, onto our final day at SXSW. Yes, it was short of us, but friends stayed behind and reviews are coming… eventually. 🙂

Sunday, March 15

Reel Shorts Three
Reel short was what it sounds like: a collection of short films in one hour and some sitting.

Apparently Warner Bros. have upset many fans over the beloved, and arguably the most famous super-hero of all time, “Superman,” by thinking about taking the film franchise in a new direction a la “Batman Begins.”

The fans are vexed that WB wants to revamp the series and believe if Supes gets the reboot, card board cutout Brandon Routh will be left out in the cold. So many fans were adamant about keeping Routh that they formed a posse of cyber friends to tell whoever is in charge how they feel.

Part Three, (Four?) in the whole Bloggers Vs. Trades War. This time Anne Thompson weighs in and defends Variety’s position. And or at least weighs in on quotes Variety EIC Peter Bart gave to MTV about four weeks ago.

She cites the “300″ sequel news as being the last big altercation between bloggers and trades and as far as we can remember, that does seem to be the last flare-up there was.

To recap, story goes like this: Collider got an interview with “300” director Zack Snyder which they called, “Exclusive Zack Snyder Video Interview Backstage at Saturn Awards.” And the news of a “300” sequel was in the third graph.

A few weeks ago “The Incredible Hulk” director Louis Leterrier was doing some mouth breathing and he sort of suggested that he might have something to do with the next Superman film that DC Comics and Warner Bros. are trying to figure out what to do with next (“Superman Returns” director Bryan Singer appears to still be attached… for now).

Anne Thompson spoke to Legendary Pictures producer Thomas Tull, who goes 50/50 with Warner Bros.

We had a sneaking suspicion when AICN reported (without quotes of course) that Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Bastards” would be two films long that this was bad or outdated intel.

And we might be right.

On the heels of Tarantino’s announcement that the script is complete and pre-production is about to commence very shortly, comes a little kernel of news via foxy Anne Thompson’s Variety Blog (Anne, please, call us).

AICN got their 2-film information from the DVD extras of the original 1977 “Inglorious Bastards,” which Quentin stole borrowed his title from (though it’s not a sequel).
