What will it take for Amy Adams to win Best Actress at the Oscars? The actress already has six nominations from performances in “American Hustle” and “Arrival,” among others, but she hasn’t managed to snag the prize yet. Maybe a team-up with director Marielle Heller on a dark comedy horror hybrid will do the trick.

Adams and Heller will work together for the first time on “Nightbitch,” and, wow, does this film sound intriguing.

While the buzz surrounding “Bombshell” has been growing more and more as we approach the release date, it’s interesting to look back and realize that there was a point in time, not that long ago, that the film about Roger Ailes and his sexual misconduct was almost completely killed. And according to star Charlize Theron, the fact that Annapurna dropped out of the production weeks before it was to begin filming was shocking and disappointing.

Annapurna started off in 2011 as a mechanism for Megan Ellison, daughter of Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, to invest in and produce films she felt passionate about. Film such as “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Her,” “American Hustle,” “Foxcatcher,” “The Master,” “Sausage Party” and “Spring Breakers,” among others.  Not all of them were financial successes, but enough were.  And they led to a slew of Oscar nominations including four Best Picture nominations.

Comedy, like most film genres, occasionally needs a kick in the pants. Historically, there have been films that have changed the landscape of the genre, hurtling it in new directions. Films like “Animal House,” “Airplane!,” “Caddyshack,” “Old School,” and more recently, “Superbad” have all given the comedy genre a much-needed shot in the arm, twisting the genre in new ways and expanding the scope in the process.

One hundred years after D.W. Griffith, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks formed the first creator-based movie studio, United Artists lives again. Today, MGM and Annapurna announced they would combine their production, marketing and distribution resources into United Artists Releasing, a new joint venture that will release original films from both entities including MGM’s recently launched Orion Releasing.

The new company will be governed by a board that will be equally represented by MGM, which has not had its own marketing and distribution departments since 2010, and Annapurna which has released its own films since 2017.

The trailer wasn’t one of our favorites from 2018, however, we can’t help but be excited for Richard Linklater’s upcoming film, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette.” Sadly, it appears we’re going to have to wait a little bit longer to see the Cate Blanchett film, as Annapurna has announced (via The Wrap) that the film is being pushed back until much later in 2019.

Originally slated for release on March 22, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” is now going to hit theaters in August.

Hollywood is in a protracted period of change.  Consolidation amongst the old guard and the rising influence of the streaming services has somehow made this town less corporate, more creative, but also somehow more cautious at the same time.  Throw in the facts the #MeToo movement has led to significant change (at least for the moment) and talent keeps somehow screwing up on social media, and it was quite a year.
