Six seasons after making the jump from a beloved indie film by David Michôd, to a series adapted for TNT, the show “Animal Kingdom” is coming to an end. Part of that is probably for one main reason. Warner Bros Discovery is changing and pivoting its business model and TNT is basically scrapping all their dramatic series and seemingly shifting into the reality TV space only.

The traditional broadcast season was over, people were more interested in being outside or going to the movies, and the TV biz mostly just focused on preparing for the Emmys and the new season in September.

But so much has changed in the TV business in the last few years, and with the proliferation of new outlets, networks and streaming services, and the ability to watch a show at basically any time you want, television has become a year-round phenomenon.

While we had mixed feelings about the first episode of TNT‘s “Animal Kingdom” when we saw it at the Tribeca Film Festival, the series based on David Michod‘s acclaimed Australian crime film still holds a potent allure. With the story relocated to the sweaty environs of California, and with Ellen Barkin sinking her teeth into the meaty lead role as the mastermind matriarch, the potential for something special is there.
