It took a few more months, but Angela Bassett finally “did the thing.” The two-time Oscar nominee has been awarded an honorary Oscar by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She joins fellow honorary Oscar winners Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton as well as Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award winner Michelle Satter. All four will be celebrated at the 2023 Governors Awards on Saturday, Nov.

The annual Oscars Luncheon occurred this morning at the Beverly Hilton which meant a large number of nominees found a seat for the annual Oscars class photo. In writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s career, the filmmaker has really only handled one major adaptation with “Jackie Brown.” That1997 film was adapted from the novel “Rum Punch” by Elmore Leonard, the same author that wrote the string of books that the show “Justified” is based on (Tarantino in talks to direct episodes for its new incarnation). “Jackie Brown” is considered one of the filmmaker’s more patient and mature outings.

Navot Papushado’s new movie, “Gunpowder Milkshake,” makes two promises and keeps them both: Spent chemical explosives and sweet dairy drinks. One comes in higher quantities than the other, much, much higher, but Papushado takes an approach to action that’s equally as sugary as the title’s latter half. No false advertising, just lots of bullets and arterial spray. You can have a milkshake, as a treat.

Ever since “Bridesmaids” became a phenomenon back in 2011, the last decade or so has seen an uptick in the number of female-driven buddy comedies. And keeping that trend alive is Netflix and its upcoming film “Otherhood.”

The new trailer for the film sort of says it best when it says the film is from producers of “Sex and the City” and “Bad Moms.” Basically, if you took those two films, smashed them together, with the ladies of ‘Sex’ having grown sons, you can see the basis of “Otherhood.”
