However, the fallow period appears to be ending. A new report reveals a second live-action studio film in the works with a considerable scope.

Though in more recent years, thanks to streaming, sentiment has changed and the sci-fi fantasy film has gone on to earn a healthy cult following. However, a decade after the fact, there are still people trying to figure out what went wrong with “John Carter?” Perhaps the film would have done better if Tom Cruise was starring?

Well, success with animated films, at least. He won two Oscars for films such as “Finding Nemo” and “WALL-E,” but his attempt at live-action filmmaking, the 2012 feature “John Carter,” has gone down in history as one of the more notorious box office flops. But that hasn’t dissuaded Stanton from trying his hand at live-action filmmaking one more time, with the upcoming “Chairman Spaceman.”

According to Deadline, Stanton is in early talks with Searchlight Pictures and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films to helm the upcoming feature, “Chairman Spaceman,” based on Thomas Pierce’s New Yorker short story of the same name.

And depending on who you talk to, you may consider the 2012 film, “John Carter,” among the films that might not have been given a fair shake when it was released. And the film’s star Taylor Kitsch is aware that the massive box office bomb is starting to gain some fans, years after its release.

A very, very loose adaptation of the little known Marvel Comics character, the FX series has pushed the creative boundaries of the episodic medium in ways that would make even David Lynch gush. Hawley and his writing team have also been more than willing to make the title character, aka David (Dan Stevens), hard to root for at times.

Walt Disney have set dates for two of their major tentpoles for the 2012 cinema season.

First up, Andrew Stanton’s ambitious “John Carter Of Mars” will hold down the summer with a June 8, 2012 slot. The film, which boasts a pretty stellar cast including Taylor Kitsch, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Polly Walker, Willem Dafoe, Lynn Collins, Bryan Cranston, Ciaran Hinds, James Purefoy, Thomas Haden Church, Mark Strong and Daryl Sabara, is a live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough’s “John Carter of Mars” series, about a Civil War soldier who is transported to Mars and embarks on alien adventures.

It was recently reported that “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski got some major league help for his forthcoming, highly anticipated film. Not only was David Fincher giving him notes on the rough cut of his film but “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille” writer/director Brad Bird and “Toy Story 3” writer Michael Arndt worked with the film’s original writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz to provide fresh script pages for six days of reshoots in June to improve “character, emotion, and theme.” That’s not a bad group of people to get to help you out on your debut feature film.

Slowly but surely, Hollywood is doing their part to de-ghettoize animation and cartoon artists. Maybe it’s the fact that most movies, with thick, artificial 3D transfers and excessive computer effects are in themselves animated films, but in some cases, it has to do with the artistry, as Pixar craftsmen Brad Bird and Andrew Stanton are both behind the camera for anticipated live-action tentpoles “Mission: Impossible IV” and “John Carter Of Mars” respectively.

It looks like Phil Lord and Chris Miller are the latest to benefit from this enhanced exposure.

James Cameron? This is how you cast a sci-fi epic. Pixar’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough’s “John Carter of Mars” series, about a Civil War soldier transported to Mars, already has a storming cast lined up – while the leads, Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins, weren’t great in “Wolverine,” they’ve both done good work on TV, in “Friday Night Lights” and “True Blood” respectively, and the supporting cast is a veritable who’s who of acclaimed character actors.

“John Carter of Mars,” the film adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1912 novel “A Princess of Mars” (which, you know, sounds too girlie) has had a long-ass production history. Most recently the film was set up at Paramount, spearheaded by Harry Knowles, of all people, with Jon Favreau and Robert Rodriguez and the dude that did “Sky Captain” in the director’s chair at different points.

The project is now back at Disney, who briefly owned the rights in the 1980’s, under the supervision of “Die Hard” director John McTiernan with a script by future “Pirates” trilogy scribes Ted Elliot and Terry Russo.

Andrew Stanton’s “John Carter Of Mars” is set to begin shooting next year with the city of Adelaide, Australia scouted as a potential filming location. The fact that Adelaide was also looked at as a filming location when the property was owned by Paramount may provide the story with a little more backbone. The film is based a popular book series by Edgar Rice Burroughs’ and tells the story of a Civil War veteran who is mysteriously transported to Mars and embarks on alien adventures.

“Wall-E” made tons of money, right? Sure, it did fifth highest grossing film in 2008, raking in $223 million in the U.S. and taking in another $309 million internationally. And plus there’s DVD too. Pixar would probably love a sequel ala the “Toy Story” series, right?

Fans would surely love it too. But “Wall-E” writer/director Andrew Stanton says nothing doing.

“Personally, I never consider sequels,” he told MTV News. “I think that takes a lot of hubris to think that your idea is going to live on and on, and I always love the idea of something just being contained and done.”

Asked if he had any ideas in mind Stanton in full shut down mode said, no.

So we finally saw the animated Pixar movie “Wall-E,” that everyone is doing backflips over. Like many have already noted, the film is endlessly charming and endearing, the narrative engaging and the characters and storyline, incredibly sweet.

Naturally, the animation is top notch and even near-magical in spots, especially a celestial dance sequence throughout the galaxy which is visually awe-inspiring.

But all this Best Picture Oscar-nomination talk is overstated nonsense churned out by film tourists, deadline jockeys and misguided manchild pundits.
