It’s the 4oth anniversary of Woodstock this year, so of course that means time to dust off another attempt at a Jimi Hendrix biopic. This one has been in the cards for years, but has generally not gone anywhere.

Every two or three years the project seems to get some slight movement, an announcement in the trades and then, as per usual, stalls or goes nowhere. The problem is just too many cooks in the kitchen and that doesn’t even include the record labels that control all the songs.

The trailer for “Battle in Seattle” has been released online; the feature played at the SXSW Film Festival back in March to a good reception. It chronicles the riots that occurred during the 1999 World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle when Northwest Pacific hippies already miserable from the constant rain used the event as an excuse to go ape shit and turned the city asunder. It was written and directed by Stuart Townsend in his directorial debut.

Our favorite monotone-sounding curmudgeon, Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields, always has a plethora of music projects on his plate and recent interviews reveal this continues to be the case. The brown-wearing enthusiast is evidently working on a movie musical with his Gothic Archies accordionist/”Lemony Snicket” author Daniel Handler, and a musical adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “Coraline” which has nothing to do with the animated film project being directed by Henry Selick. [New York Times]

While Andre 3000, is busy doing press for his this weekend’s “Semi-Pro” release, he’ll still find some time to reprise his role on the hit FX drama “The Shield” this summer, as his comic book store owner character hits the campaign trail running for mayor.

Thanks to Outkast’s Andre 3000 who saves us from writing the “why do rock biopics get announced and then never happen,” piece. You could call this the rock-biopic public service announcement that would kind of go like this:

Dear Audiences,
Generally there are 10,0000 too many cooks when it comes to typical rock-biopic (especially if they’re dead). Too many people own to many pieces of the pie whether its song publishing, record labels, rights to ones story and family members (usually squabbling) that have to independently approve every little matter.

So the “Love Me Sexy” video from the basketball comedy “Semi-Pro” actually works twofold: it acts as an obvious viral promotional tool and it actually reveals some of the film’s plot (not to mention teases the soundtrack, see below).

Set in 1976 Will Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder who apparently used the profits from his chart-topping success “Love Me Sexy” to leverage his dream of owning a basketball team.

R-Rated ‘Semi-Pro’ Makes Will Ferrell Movie Look Actually Funny

You might have seen the original “Semi-Pro” trailer – the Will Ferrell basketball movie – and thought, “eh, this doesn’t look funny,” but the recently released red-band trailer is pretty good. With the stupid humor amped up, it’s looking better and better.

Hopefully it’s similar to ‘Walk Hard’ which had pretty mediocre trailers, but the film turned out to be pretty funny. “Semi-Pro,” a b-ball film set in the ’70s (of course), also stars Outkast’s Andre 3000, Will Arnett from “Arrested Development,” SNL alum Tim Meadows and Woody Harrelson.

Images of Andre 3000 on the set of “Battle In Seattle,” the film about the incendiary and infamous 1999 WTO riots have leaked online (courtesy of SitDownStandUp). Additional photos can also be seen at the film’s official site. Aside from the Outkast star, the film also features Ray Liota, Woody Harrelson, Charlize Theron, Michelle Rodriguez, Connie Nielsen and a host of character actors.

The film is directed by actor filmmaker Stuart Townsend (he lives with Theron in Los Angeles).
