Then again, maybe we’re just taking it a bit personally. Maybe every character in the Anand Tucker-directed thriller is as selfish and professionally corrupt as the film’s protagonist Jimmy Erskine, a 1930s newspaper critic often portrayed with devilish glee by none other than Ian McKellen.

While “Roma” was out there grabbing all the Best Foreign-Language Film trophies, the black and white musical drama starring Joanna Kulig and Tomasz Kot, directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, was a hit among critics and those who saw the film. And now, thanks to that success, one of the actors is set to take on the biggest role of his career.

The U.K. Film Council put out a press release yesterday containing information on all the films they’ve invested in in the last year, and we’ve already revealed some of them, including new projects for James Marsh, Paddy Considine, and Oliver Hirschbiegel. Delving deeper into the list, there’s plenty more of enticing tidbits about future projects on the way from some of the big names of British, and international cinema. Among them:

— Aside from his collaboration with Conor McPherson, as discussed this morning, “Man on Wire” director James Marsh is re-teaming with the producer of that film, Simon Chinn, for something with the working title of “Project Nim,” which was the name of an ape language study of a chimpanzee named Nim Chimpsky, who was taught human sign language, and was able to form a sentence as long as 16 words.

Why even bother writing an In Theaters piece this week? Because this is The Playlist and dammit if we aren’t committed to our cause! Superbowl Sunday is this week, so the day’s grosses will be down, especially among males, which bodes well for “Dear John.” But can it really challenge “Avatar,” which has been the top movie for well over a month now? Time will tell, but a change could really do us good in this dry season.

Last week we fell behind when the trailer and poster for IFC’s “Red Riding” Trilogy — a triptych of films that center around the manhunt for the “Yorkshire Ripper,” a serial killer who terrorized northwest England in the 1970s and ’80s — was released. Well, now we have a good excuse to catch up and post them.

Written by Tony Grisoni (Terry Gilliam collaborator on “Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas” and the upcoming ‘Quixote’ re-do), and adapted from novels by David Peace, the trio of films were directed by Julian Jarrold (“Brideshead Revisited”), James Marsh (“Man on Wire”), and Anand Tucker (“Shopgirl”) and they sound like a pretty epic event (Ridley Scott apparently already wants to remake them).

Now that the fall Award season films have all been accounted for at least promotionally (we’ve seen the trailers, etc.) studios are starting to think ahead to the dreck, filler films they have ready to dump release at the beginning of the year dumping ground season.

Hence the arrival of the poster and trailer for “Leap Year,” a romantic comedy starring two actors we like, Amy Adams and Matthew Goode.

However, as you might expect, it looks excruciating, panders to every rom-com cliche in the book and even stoops so low to prey on the female insecurity of getting married and finding a man before a certain age.

Over the weekend, the Telluride Film Festival has seen the U.S. premiere of the “Red Riding” Trilogy, made up of Julian Jarrold’s “1974,” James Marsh’s “1980” and Anand Tucker’s “1983.” We caught up with the films a little while back, and we’re happy to report that the whole endeavor marks easily one of the cinematic highlights of the year.

Adapted from the novels by David Peace (whose “The Damned United” has also recently been adapted for the screen, and will screen at Toronto), “Red Riding” is a James Ellroy-like crime epic set in the Yorkshire region of Northern England, examining police corruption and the very darkest aspects of human nature.
