In simultaneous ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles, the Writers Guild of America handed out the winners for the 2019 WGA Awards.  Many of the winners were expected (shocker, “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” wins again!) but in the film categories, the top winners were major surprises.

Bo Burnham’s script for “Eighth Grade,” which did not earn an Oscar nomination, beat major competition from “Roma” and “Green Book” in the Original Screenplay category.

The Cinema Audio Society handed out its 2019 CAS Awards on Saturday night and provided some keen insight on how the Sound Mixing Oscar race might play out.  “Bohemian Rhapsody” took the top prize over major competition from “A Star is Born” and “First Man.”  Whether AMPAS members feel the same way about the Freddie Mercury and Queen biopic in this category remains to be seen.

It was, as we’ve discussed already, a great year for movies (The 25 Best Films Of 2018). It was perhaps a less great one on TV, at least on the surface. There were more scripted shows than ever once again, but with some heavy-hitters skipping a year, and a few high-profile disappointments (Hi, “The Romanoffs!”), it was hard not to feel that the ageless TV vs. film debate came out of 2018 with a point on the movies board.

It’s that time of year again! The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented in just a few months, but before then, we have the official nominations. We have the complete list of nominated series and TV movies that are selected as the best television from the last year. Leading the way, as expected, you have Donald Glover’s “Atlanta,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Westworld,” and “Game of Thrones.” The latter of which took a break from last year’s festivities.

We’re still stunned “Twin Peaks” and “The Looming Tower” weren’t nominated, but Emmy voters have stage taste sometimes.  Instead, it looks like there is zero competition for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” which should win this category in a cakewalk. [Posted July 17]
