It’s been six years since Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who gave us the one-two punch of “Alien Resurrection” and “Amélie” has directed a narrative feature film, but we may get a new film from him and “Amélie” writer Guillaume Laurant. The duo is reportedly getting back together to helm the sci-fi film “Big Bug” for Netflix.

Yesterday you read our Best Films of 200o. Today, on to 2001…

What was the state of cinema? Oscar-wise, in 2001 the Academy Awards made some bold nominations, but of course awarded the safer “Gladiator” before Steven Soderbergh’s far superior, “Traffic.” Still, Soderbergh did pull off the feat of being nominated twice in the same directorial category for his drug trade drama and “Erin Brockovich” (he would win for “Traffic” and Julia Roberts would take Best Actress for ‘Brockovich).

TIFF Review: ‘Mimacs’ Is Quixotic, But More Of The Same…

Cinephiles adore French auteur Jean-Pierre Jeunet for pictures like “The City of Lost Children,” and “Delicatessen” (not so much “Alien Resurrection”), but it was 2001’s deliriously wonderful “Amelie,” that truly cemented his stature on the international map. As TIFF says it is one of the most “unquestionably popular films of the last decade,” which is completely true.

The director and his romantic, hyper-capricious and imaginative filmmaking return with his very first film since 2004’s “A Very Long Engagement.” This new one, “Micmacs” — a picture which was on our Most Anticipated of 2009 list — is evidently a satirical film about the gun trade and warring arms dealers.

More Clips From Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s ‘Micmacs à tire-larigot’

A host of clips from French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s (the director of “Amelie,” “Alien Resurrection” and “Delicatessen”) next effort “Micmacs à tire-larigot” have been unveiled.

The film centers on a man and his friends who come up with an intricate and original plan to destroy two big weapons manufacturers.

The film stars many well-known French actors including, Dany Boon (the French dramedy, “My Best Friend,” which is being adapted into English by Wes Anderson), André Dussollier (known for his work in Alain Renais films among many others), Yolande Moreau (the lead of “Seraphine“) and Dominique Pinon (a regular of all Jeunet films including, “Amelie,” “A Very Long Engagement” and “City of Lost Children”).
