‘Betty Anne Waters’ Finds ‘Conviction’ And A Fall Release Date

While some people truly value a descriptive, evocative title for their upcoming film, other studios like to play it safe, going for generic one-word headings for their releases. We’re always bummed to see a really colorful title fall by the wayside, but it’s especially dispiriting to see something so straightforward dumbed-down even further. Such is the case with “Betty Anne Waters,” never a very good title, now being replaced by the plain-sounding “Conviction.” Not to be confused, of course, by the eight other “Conviction”‘s currently found on IMDb.

Get ready to set up your Tivos for “60 Minutes” this Sunday when James Cameron discusses his Leona Lewis music video film “Avatar.” The Hollywood Reporter has an excerpt from the show on their site, which includes this choice quote: “He shows off his office, where he keeps a special film prop, the ship’s wheel from ‘Titanic.’ and says “I keep this in my office because I know what it feels like to be at the helm of a sinking ship.” It’s Friday, so we’ll lay off that easy target of a comment.

You really don’t need to see every critically-acclaimed movie of the year in order to forecast the Oscars. If you follow blogs and critics enough, you can set your watch to what will be under consideration, what will be “in the Oscar bubble.” They usually set the climate for awards contenders, regardless of quality, and an excellent case study in Oscar candidacy has presented itself with the sudden rise up of under-the-radar drama “Crazy Heart.”

Yesterday we reported on a last-minute industry screening coinciding with rumors that the previously-unseen “Crazy Heart” was angling for a late ’09 release.

Weekend Box-Office: ‘Activity’ For Paramount Horror Is Abnormally Good

Promotions will undoubtedly be handed out all over Paramount’s marketing department on Monday after the no-budget, no-stars horror flick “Paranormal Activity” vaulted from the 5th spot to #1 this weekend. Earning an astonishing $22 million dollars, on just under 2000 screens, the film has taken in a whopping $62 million at the box office so far. Clearly, the viral marketing is working and word-of-mouth on this is strong as audiences are lining up in droves to get their Halloween fix.

In Theaters: ‘Amelia,’ ‘Antichrist,’ ‘The Vampire’s Assistant’

Following last week’s big box-office for a widely varied selection of new films, another diverse crop shows up this week and should keep the box-office hot into Halloween. Looking to kick “Where the Wild Things Are” from its throne are several films aimed at a younger audience from animated action to grisly horror, the young set has many options, almost all of them unappealing and cynical-looking. “Wild Things” hopefully will have the staying power to keep kids hopeful and joyous, but it’s not likely going to reign at the top of the box-office charts again.

Ewan McGregor Talks ‘The Ghost’; Says Polanski Is “Brusque, But Brilliant”

Roman Polanski’s “The Ghost” is a contemporary political thriller about a writer who is selected to ghost-write the memoirs of a British Prime Minister but uncovers some dark secrets along the way.

The film has a great cast that includes Ewan McGregor (the writer), Pierce Brosnan (a proxy for Tony Blair), Kim Cattrall, Eli Wallach, Tom Wilkinson, Olivia Williams and James Belushi.

McGregor recently spoke about working with the legendary film director and was candid about his blunt demeanor, but also highly laudatory about his skills.

First Look: ‘Date Night,’ Seth Rogen In Errr… Costume, New ‘Messenger Poster’

Here’s fairly non-exciting first look at “Date Night,” the upcoming wacky-sounding Shawn Levy comedy starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey and as a bored married couple who pretend to be a glamorous couple for one night, which leads to mistaken identity (!) and a hilarious chase through New York City with the mob after them! Cue the gut-busting laughs.

Levy is know for his admirable masterworks “Night at the Museum,” and “Cheaper By the Dozen,” but does have one thing going for him.

Tim Burton Finds The Alice For His ‘Wonderland’

After a long exhaustive search Tim Burton has cast teen Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, who has previously held roles in HBO’s therapy whine-fest “In Treatment”and the Aussie hospital drama “All Saints,” in his upcoming adaptation of the classic “Alice in Wonderland“story. (how is it that it took him this long to tell this tale?) Burton’s take on Lewis Carroll’s classic novel is sure to be strange, and will include his goth-queen wife Helena Bonham Carter in some capacity, no?
