The Peabody Awards are revealing their 2024 nominees in two batches this year and today was an opportunity to shine the spotlight on the non-narrative works. Among the Documentary, News, Public Service, and Radio/Podcast nominees were a slew of Oscar-nominated films including “The Eternal Memory,” “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” and “All The Beauty and the Bloodshed.” Oh, and this year’s Academy Award winner, “20 Days in Mariupol.”

This year’s narrative nominees will be revealed on Thursday.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the shortlists for Documentary Feature, Documentary Short, Live Action Short, and Animated Short for 2023. As expected acclaimed films “All That Breathes” and “All the Beauty and All the Bloodshed” made the cut for the top category. Also expected, the popular Amazon Studios doc “Good Night, Oppy” did not. And, no, Taylor Swift’s extended music video for “All Too Well” is not coming close to earning an Oscar nomination in the Live Action Short category.

Was it a shock when Laura Poitras‘ new documentary “All The Beauty And The Bloodshed,” about Nan Goldin and the fall of the Sackler family, won the Golden Lion at Venice in September? Only in that it’s the second documentary ever to win Venice’s top prize. After all, Poitras’s credentials speak for themselves. Her 2014 film “Citizenfour,” about Edward Snowden and the NSA spying scandal, won Best Documentary Feature at the 87th Academy Awards.

As we are seeing this film festival season return to what we all knew and loved pre-pandemic, we are so excited to have one of the longest-running U.S.-based film festivals return for its 60th year (yes, 60!!). The non-competitive New York Film Festival has a lot of great films, as always, this year which includes multiple films by Hong Sangsoo,  a 50th Anniversary screening of  “Solaris” complete with a live musical accompaniment, “Master Gardener” by Paul Schrader, and “Decision to Leave” by Park Chan-wook.

Her 1986 magnum opus, “The Ballad of Sexual Dependence” — named after a song in Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s “The Threepenny Opera” — became a reference for vulnerable, autobiographical work in photography, reframing the ever-shifting lines between private and public within art.

Last night, the festival announced Laura Poitras’ new documentary “All The Beauty And The Bloodshed” as the Centerpiece selection for the 60th New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall on October 7, and today Film at Lincoln Center announced James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” as a Main Slate selection of the festival, playing at Alice Tully Hall on October 12.
