Not only that, it’s a solid mix of genres, giving consumers quite a lot to think about purchasing come the fall.

Leading the way in September is “All of Us Strangers.” Yes, the acclaimed drama from filmmaker Andrew Haigh which was released only last year is getting the Criterion treatment. The film will be presented in 4K, as you might expect, with some new goodies such as an interview with Haigh, as well as another interview with DP Jamie D.

And that’s when I realized, “Oh, no I’d spoiled the ‘Drag Race UK’ season, er, series 5 winner for him.” Granted, it had been almost two weeks since the finale and as a publically avid “Drag Race” fan, I just assumed he would have watched it. Especially considering his “All of Us Strangers” director, Andrew Haigh, was catching up every week.

The two-time Emmy and SAG Award winner is heartbreaking as a mother reuniting with her now adult son in Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” (still one of the best-reviewed movies of 2023). But despite a Gotham Award, British Independent Film Award, and London Film Film Critics Circle nomination, she’s been somewhat ignored by American critics for “flashier” performances.

Despite the tensions in our industry, the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, those linger aftereffects, and the way that box office seemed to wobble all year long with highs and lows—#Barbenheimer being a big high, seemingly sure bets like ‘Mission Impossible’ and “The Marvels’ and all DC superhero films flopping or underperforming—it’s kind of been chaotic year for the film and TV industry.

As end-of-year “best of” lists continue to roll in, along with critics’ awards already naming the year’s strongest contenders, it’s easy to lose certain titles to the shuffle. Luckily, it will be tough to misstep this month with plenty of upcoming films that offer a variety of genres and perspectives. From the Oscar-friendly titles that come in towards the end of the month to the latest movie in the long-running Godzilla franchise kickstarting it and films from master filmmakers crowding the middle, there’s no time for rest.

In the context of the film, it also leads to several intimate cinematic scenes that are both emotionally moving and, well, quite erotic.

Sure, there is another buzzworthy sex scene between stars Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal for a fall movie season seemingly full of them. And, there are borderline supernatural moments that make you wonder what’s really going on, but the scenes we are referring to are actually more grounded than the film’s overall ghost story narrative.

And while the SAG strike is still ongoing, that doesn’t mean the actors went unrecognized. The question is whether those not part of signatory films at A24 or NEON will be able to attend if there isn’t a resolution in the weeks to come. But more importantly, we have nominees and they are major films and television programs in the awards season game.

What could be better?

The 61st annual New York Film Festival kicks off in a few days, and there is a lot to look forward to. Some films audiences may have seen at Telluride, TIFF, or Venice, but that doesn’t make this year’s line-up any less exciting as an exploratory and human theme is seen across sections of the film festival.

Sure, there were only a few actors on hand (including one who was rumored as not supposed to be there), but there was hardly a bad film on the screening slate and a number of world premieres that will dominate critic’s year-end top 10 lists. Oh, and once again, the small Colorado mountain town is the festival with the biggest Oscar boost.

An often sublime drama that features a unique reunion between a son and his parents and a transformative, passionate romance. Both events are unexpected and both have an air of mystery surrounding them. Not everything is what it seems, but it may not matter as much as the themes and performances populating “All of Us Strangers,” which debuted this evening at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival.

But it’s also a cinephile’s haven in terms of community, there’s a knowing togetherness, lack of hierarchy and you can easily be in line for a film with a random science teacher from Albuquerque who is also a massive film nerd as you could be next to legendary director Werner Herzog.

While he hasn’t made a feature-length film since 2017’s English coming-of-age movie, “Lean On Pete,” starring Charlie Plummer, Chloë Sevigny and Travis Fimmel, he was right back on it in 2021 with The BBC miniseries “The North Water” starring Colin Farrell, Jack O’Connell and Stephen Graham.
