With the film industry becoming more and more reliant either on franchises and blockbusters or low-budget horror, there’s not a lot of space for the mid-budget adult drama. And those projects have now, for the most part, migrated over to TV where streaming services and premium networks snatch up limited series filled with all-star casts.

The aggressively artificial village — complete with an annual Oktoberfest celebration — is not the obvious setting for a rom-com, but it’s an unintentionally inspired one. I can only imagine that nothing ever feels quite real in Leavenworth, but everyone appears to be having a good time regardless, and that’s the general experience of sitting through “Somebody I Used To Know.” There’s not a single moment in the film that is palpably authentic or genuinely romantic, but the ensemble nonetheless puts their pluckiest foot forward.

A TV producer finds herself confronting those aspects in the upcoming film “Somebody I Used To Know.” Alison Brie stars as the ambitious but flawed Ally, whose life takes an unexpected turn. The new film “Spin Me Round” thinks so. Having premiered earlier this at the film SXSW Film Festival, “Spin Me Round” stars Alison Brie as a woman whose business trip embraces romantic chaos. It also marks Brie’s second credit as co-writer — her first being the critically acclaimed “Horse Girl.” Both projects paired the actress with co-writer and director Jeff Baena.

Across its eight episodes, a trophy wife lives on a shelf, an ignored woman disappears, and a frustrated wife returns her husband to a big box store. Its short fables are so on the nose that, were the words of this review somehow incorporated into one of the episode’s scripts, viewers would likely see a woman with the show’s title balanced just above her nostrils.

With an already diverse body of work ranging from period dramas to comedies, animation, video games, indie darlings, and more, this year especially feels like a snapshot of everything she’s strived for her entire career thus far. She has four acting credits across such films as “Horse Girl,” “The Rental,” “Happiest Season,” and “Promising Young Woman” while also spending time behind the camera directing an episode of the Disney+ docuseries “Marvel 616” and producing and co-writing the script for “Horse Girl.” Since her dueling breakout performances in “Mad Men” and “Community,” we’ve always known Brie was someone who refused to be put into a box, and it’s that exact drive that’s made her such an excitingly unpredictable talent on screen and a force of versatility.

Unfortunately, no one predicted COVID would disrupt the entire world and the film industry, specifically. And so, Netflix rescinded its fourth season offer and outright canceled the series, shocking and disappointing millions of fans. But according to Alison Brie, the star of the series, she really would love one more shot to end the show, but she’s happy for what was made.

Abby (Kristen Stewart) and her girlfriend, Harper (Mackenzie Davis) are on a neighborhood Christmas decorations tour, and Harper is trying to cajole Abby into the holiday spirit. After a wayward excursion onto a rooftop, the couple’s night ends in giggles and kissing.

The genre thrives on predictability and the feel-good reassurances of plot convention. Most rom-coms are “will they/won’t they” narratives about a heteronormative couple who need to find a balance to secure a romantic future together. Filmgoers have seen it all before: guy meets girl, conflicts arise, but everything works out for the best. Add in a major life event like a wedding or a holiday and a little bit of family tension, and the formula is complete.

The series, starring Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, and Marc Maron, has become the latest casualty of production shutdowns in the difficult era of COVID-19 delays and production halts.

Whether it’s the unrequited romantic anxiety that emanates from would-be best friends, the vague racism and misogyny conspicuously aimed at one of the female Iranian characters, or the imprecise red neck-y vibes and Trump-ian air around the main hayseed caretaker characters, everything seems just slightly off.
