Despite rumors of budgetary troubles, and our extensive campaigning (in case you missed it, it kicked off our new “Should This Be Made?” feature last week), 20th Century Fox’s prequel to the “Alien” series is moving full-speed ahead. Recent casting rumors have linked the likes of Noomi Rapace, Gemma Arterton, Carey Mulligan and Abbie Cornish to the lead role, and Damon Lindelof, of “Lost,” “Star Trek” and “Cowboys & Aliens” fame, was brought on to rewrite Jon Spaihts’ draft in July.

Another day, another vague wish-list of actresses for a high profile project! Despite rumors of the R-rated films hitting budgetary troubles, casting seems to be moving forward on the Ridley Scott-helmed prequels to “Alien.” Rumors have been rife for a while that, as with the original films, the lead would be a female role, and Gemma Arterton revealed that she was set for a meeting with Scott a few weeks ago (and possibly blowing her chances as a result).

Ridley Scott In Battle With Fox Over Budget & Rating For ‘Alien’ Prequel?

Remember earlier this year when Ridley Scott talked non-stop about his “Alien” prequel films? And then remember how everything suddenly got very quiet? Perhaps there is a reason for this.

Script Flags (via Bleeding Cool) are reporting that Ridley Scott and 20th Century Fox are clashing over the budget and rating for his prequels. According to the site, “Scott wants a budget of around $250m to make it a sci-fi spectacular, and is also pushing for an 18-rated level of violence and horror” (bear in mind this is a Brit site so change “18-rated” to “R”).

Gemma Arterton To Star In Christopher Nolan-Penned Thriller ‘The Keys To The Street,’ Meeting With Ridley Scott For ‘Alien’ Prequels

It might come as a surprise to those of you who saw her performances as Princess Exposition in this year’s “Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “Clash of the Titans,” but Gemma Arterton can act; she delivered an excellent performance in the indie thriller “The Disappearance of Alice Creed,” and was also good on British TV as “Tess of the D’Urbervilles.” While she’s committed to the upcoming “Clash” sequel, where she’ll presumably continue to stand around in the background and be a bit useless, she’s also lining up a couple of projects which could give her something more to sink her teeth into.

Diamond during the development of a script that “You have all the scenes — just go home and word it in.” Screenwriters have never been treated particularly well in Hollywood, from the old studio system to the recent writer’s strike, and today’s climate is no different — in fact, until very recently, the market for spec scripts had been shrinking rapidly. Things may be on the up now, however, and there are plenty of exciting new voices who look like they’ll make a big splash in the next couple of years.

Ridley Scott likes to talk, and when he appeared at the Hero Complex Film Festival over the weekend he didn’t hold back. Presenting a double feature of “Alien” and “Blade Runner” the director naturally talked about his gestating “Alien” prequels as well as a small handful of other projects on his every growing plate.

Even though the internet seems to have forgotten he already mentioned this way back in April, Scott confirmed (again) that the prequel will center on the “space jockey” from the original film, the lond dead being found by crew in “Alien.” “No one ever asked that question: What’s the story there?

While his position in Hollywood’s A-list is unlikely to change, four of Ridley Scott’s last five movies have all underperformed financially to varying degrees, with “American Gangster” the only flat-out hit (although “Robin Hood” is something of a smash internationally, to be fair). It’s unlikely to worry the director too much, however — his production company Scott Free is behind the likes of TV hit “The Good Wife” and the upcoming “The A-Team,” while RSA Films, his promo company, is one of the major players in the commercials field.

Doing the press rounds for his forthcoming “Robin Hood” has given Ridley Scott plenty of opportunities to elaborate the details on the gestating 3D prequels (yep, there’s going to be two) to his seminal sci-fi horror flick “Alien.”

Last week, the director revealed that the film will pull the curtain back on the mystery of the “Alien” (bad idea) by exploring the Space Jockeys of the original film and reveal why they were on the planet in the first place terraforming.

More news on the “Alien” prequel out of Ridley Scott from the recent “Robin Hood” junket that Universal decided to not invite us to, :P.

Sorry, we should say prequels, plural. That’s right, Scott — who revealed more details about the prequel this morning; another female protag, alien redesign, set 30 years before the original and more — corrected journos this afternoon (Hitfix) that the film would be, “Prequels, two films” and yes, they would inevitably be shot in 3D (Scott, always a technician and an unsentimental one seems to just realize that this is part of the game now, so why fight it, we sort of admire that wise, unfussy approach).

Even though Ridley Scott’s resume has been spotty for well over a decade with plenty of hits and misses, new information on the forthcoming “Alien” prequel is still something we’re generally pretty curious about.

In a recent interview with MTV News, Scott had some more to say about the story, reiterating some things we already know —
Sigourney Weaver’s character Ripley will not appear (though MTV goes on to basically beg for a cameo), and it’s set 30 years before the first “Alien” in 2085.

The success of Pixar’s early CGI films inspired every other studio in town to blindly greenlight endless terrible CGI animations, ignoring the fact that those films worked, and connected, because they put time into the story and characters, whereas the likes of say, “Open Season,” um, didn’t. Similarly, the two billion dollar success of “Avatar” has already accelerated the desire to put every tentpole in three dimensions, ignoring the fact that it proved so successful because 1) it found a genuine sense of awe and wonder missing in most big movies of the last few years and because 2) people, for whatever reason, connected with the story.

Ridley Scott Back On ‘Aliens’ Prequel As Director

20th Century Fox’s “Alien” prequel is growing legs with Jon Spaihts “now hired to scribe. Who? Spaihts wrote an unproduced sci-fi script called “Shadow 19” that has Keanu Reeves attached and also has been hired to write a space epic called, “
“Passengers,” but he has no discernible IMDB credits yet.

Spaihts apparently got the job after pitching to the studio and the director’s Scott Free, which will produce the film.

More importantly, it looks like Ridley Scott has bitten the bullet and is now “attached to return as director” despite championing protege Carl Erik Rinsch to helm.

Tony Scott Confirms New ‘Alien’ Film Prequel

Tony Scott has confirmed previous rumors of a possible new “Alien” film in the works. Scott confirmed that commercial and music video director Carl Erik Rinsch, one of he and Ridley’s auspicious protege’s, will be helming the project and added that the film will be a prequel to the existing franchise rather than a reboot.

Hopes are for the film to begin shooting by year’s end. Interestingly, “Alien 3” was also the feature directorial debut for a music video director (Fincher).
