John Ridley Teams With ‘La La Land’ Songwriters For New Musical Limited Series At Showtime

Is there a filmmaker working currently that has as much of an eclectic filmography as John Ridley? While we can’t say that everything he’s written and/or directed is incredible, Ridley has credits that include scripts for films such as “U-Turn,” “Red Tails,” “12 Year’s a Slave,” and “Ben-Hur.” And as a director, he’s worked on projects such as a Jimi Hendrix biopic and the upcoming limited series “The Godfather of Harlem.” So, it shouldn’t shock anyone that his next big project is a musical featuring music from the duo behind “The Greatest Showman” and “La La Land.”

According to Deadline, Ridley has signed on to write, direct, and produce a new limited series for Showtime.

Best And Worst Of 2019 Grammy Awards: Lady Gaga, Janelle Monae, Diana Ross

There was a good hour where you wondered “What were the producers thinking?” but for the most part, the 2019 Grammy Awards were incredibly entertaining. Especially considering the lack of awards handed out on the telecast and its 3-hour and 40-minute or so runtime.

You can find out all of the major category winners here, but here’s a look at some of the best and worst moments of the telecast.

Best: Production Design of “Havana”
Camila Cabello’s “Havanna” feels like it’s been out forever (August 2017 qualifies thanks to Grammy rules) but Ricky Martin doing a cameo and some sick dancers helped freshen it up a bit.

‘Sex And The City 2’ Soundtrack Features Alicia Keys, Dido, Erykah Badu & The Sex And The City Men’s Choir (Seriously)

Despite the easy target that “Sex And The City” has become for all things frivolous and female, the truth of the matter is, there was a time when the HBO show was actually smart, funny and sexy. Seriously. But since the leap to the big screen, the concept has merely become a dull slog in watching privileged, rich, white women have sex and shop. Boring.

But even though we may not like it, the show still has a huge legion of fans and with “Sex And The City 2” set to hit theaters next month, details on the accompanying soundtrack have arrived.

Alicia Keys Eyeing Lead Role In ‘The House At Sugar Beach’

According to a couple of our trusted sources, singer Alicia Keys is set to produce and star in an adaptation of “The House At Sugar Beach”, based on the NY Times journalist Helene Cooper’s memoir.

The book is some pretty heady stuff, telling the story of Helene Cooper’s privileged Liberian childhood, which was cut brutally short by a bloody 1980 coup. The movie follows her family’s escape and survival, and 23 years later, Cooper’s return to her native country to find the foster sister that her family left behind.

Nick Cassavetes To Remake ‘A Star Is Born’ (Again)?

Well, this is odd news. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Nick Cassavetes (who proves that talent doesn’t necessarily fall down the family tree) is in early talks to direct an “updated version” of the already thrice made “A Star Is Born.”

The familiar story about wide-eyed girl dreaming of stardom who finds a helping hand from a washed out, alcoholic older leading man was first made as a drama by William Wellman in 1937 but truly became legendary when it became a musical in 1954 starring Judy Garland and directed by George Cukor.

Color us totally disinterested. When will a movie come out with some good music in it that’s not just score material? It’s famine over here at the Playlist lately, or maybe we’re just fuckin’ dead sick of Stuffthatwhitepeoplelike indie-rock, which seems to be the only thing contemporary pop or rock music that gets thrown into movies these days, and might we add, thrown in badly.

We had it up on an old story, but it got taken down, so we figure we’ll put it up one more time, but holy shit, the new Bond theme for “Quantum Of Solace,” By White Stripes’er Jack White and Alicia Keys is total ear gash.

We don’t mind either of these two, both are talented (yes, even Keys), but god, this might even be worse that Chris Cornell’s Bond theme if you can possibly imagine that.

Jack White Disavows Bond Theme In Coke Zero Commercial

The new Bond theme for “Quantum of Solace,” (titled “Another Way To Die”) written by White Stripes frontman Jack White and R&B singer Alicia Keys, was used recently in a Coke Zero advertisement and White wants to wash his hands the shameless cross-promotion stunt. His management released this statement: “Jack White was commissioned by Sony Pictures to write a theme song for the James Bond film “Quantum of Solace,” not for Coca-Cola.” White already wrote a song for Coca Cola back in the day (“What Goes Around Comes Around“), but obviously it was with his consent and was his intent.

‘The Secret Life Of Bees’ Trailer Is Sentimental & Treacly, Just How You Like It

We aren’t crying, its just that something got in our eye. “The Secret Life of Bees” trailer is online and it looks a tad sentimental. The story follows an orphaned southern girl, Lily Owens, played by Dakota Fanning and her black caregiver (Jennifer Hudson) as they end up on a successful beekeeping farm owned by the Boatwrights, who happen to be three eccentric sisters with past ties to Lily’s mother (Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo).

– The Flaming Lips are not only holding to their promise this time, they’re actually getting there early for once. The band with the terrible track record, where their movie is concerned, had previously said they’d hope to have the long-overdue “Christmas On Mars” ready for DVD by Christmas. Now the disc is coming out in October, though no specific street date has been reported yet. The official and new trailer is out as well.

Jack White And Alicia Keys Team Up For ‘Quantum Solace’ Bond Theme

Here’s an odd pairing. Jack White of the White Stripes and Alicia Keys have been chosen to write and record the next Bond theme for the upcoming film, “Quantum of Solace,” starring the latest 007 Daniel Craig (this reboot was the best one in decades, even if it’s a ‘Bourne’ retread).

Their collaboration, “Another Way To Die,” is the first duet in the 22-year history of James Bond film themes. White wrote, produced and played drums on the track.
