One year after it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, the New Zealand black comedy “Bad Behaviour,” starring Jennifer Connelly (“Top Gun: Maverick,” “Snowpiercer”), is finally coming out in North America. The film is the directorial debut of actor-turned-filmmaker Alice Englert. Englert made some noticeable turns in “Ginger & Rosa” (2012), playing Lena Duchannes in the film “Beautiful Creatures” (2013), and in “Top Of The Lake China Girl” (2017), but she is also known as the daughter of famous New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion, so clearly filmmaking runs in their blood.

Actor-turned-filmmaker Alice Englert’s “Bad Behaviour” is a dirty bomb of a movie, and it almost seems intentionally devised to keep the viewer off-balance. What at first appears a rather obvious send-up of self-help culture turns into a take-no-prisoners assault on narrative expectations and norms, all the while painting a pointed portrait of a truly complicated protagonist, the kind of character whose motivations and intentions are so slippery, you can barely make up your mind about her before she gives you a reason to change it again.

In addition to the 1988, Stephen Frears-directed Christopher Hampton adapted “Dangerous Liaisons,” we’ve gotten the stately “Valmont” and even the glorious camp of “Cruel Intentions.” Needless to say, the world was perhaps not clamoring for another look into the backstabbing lives of the Marquise de Merteuil and her sometimes lover/enemy, Valmont.

Watching Jane Campion stumble through the second season of her SundanceTV series, “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” means watching an imminently talented and self-assured storyteller misplace her self-assurance. In keeping with its first season, “Top of the Lake’s” craftsmanship remains stellar in its second; Campion’s eye for impeccable visuals hasn’t faded. Also in keeping with the first season is her high standard for performance. No single actor in her ensemble cast slacks, or slouches, or otherwise impedes the production.

Let’s go through the checklist. 1: Jane Campion is one of my favorite working filmmakers; 2: The only other time she collaborated with megastar Nicole Kidman, she made “The Portrait Of A Lady,” which I’ll defend to all comers as the underrated masterpiece in both women’s catalogues; 3: I’ve extolled the virtues of Elisabeth Moss as an actress so much recently (especially in relation to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and most recently for her small, terrific role in Ruben Östlund‘s “The Square“) that I’m a little sick of hearing my own fawning praise; and 4: “Top Of The Lake” season 1 was one of the best TV shows I’ve watched in the last few years — knotty, atmospheric, noirish and novelistic.
