Bruce Miller’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” has experienced a fascinating, stuttering evolution since its accolade-encrusted premiere in 2017. The first season, which took the words and visions of Margaret Atwood’s eponymous sci-fi novel and brought them to blue-toned light, was a runaway success. The second season, which premiered last year, went noticeably off-book as June (Elisabeth Moss) metamorphosed from an everywoman just trying to get by into a full-blown leader of the revolution.

Hulu‘s “The Handmaid’s Tale” made waves last year upon its first season release. It would have spawned thousands of think-pieces even if it wasn’t any good—which, thankfully, it was. From its get-go, “The Handmaid’s Tale” contained some of the very best acting, cinematography, and direction on all of TV.

TORONTO – The final ceremony for the 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards is only five days away, but last weekend the Creative Emmy Awards were handed out over consecutive nights. While most of the non-televised ceremonies were dedicated to categories such as Make-Up, Cinematography and the interactive fields a number of major winners were revealed including Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. That insanely competitive field saw “The Handmaid’s Tale’s” Alexis Bledel triumph over impressive work from Cicely Tyson (“How To Get Away With Murder”), Alison Wright (“The Americans”) and the incredible Ann Dowd (“The Leftovers”).

Offred, the central character who narrates Margaret Atwood‘s 1985 novel “The Handmaid’s Tale,” often closes a chapter with a pithy summation of her state of mind: “My self is a thing I must now compose, as one composes a speech” or “How can I keep on living?” or “So it was worse than I thought.” Offred, the narrator of Bruce Miller‘s adaptation of Atwood’s book, played by Elisabeth Moss, is pithier still; one of the first three episodes of Hulu‘s terrific new show, which will be available to watch on April 26th, ends with her internal monologue whispering just one word: “Fuck.”

It’s an indication that this is a updated take on the story — this ain’t your momma’s ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ — but the motives the behind the changes do not feel as crassly commercial as they so often do.
