Who could possibly imitate David Bowie’s remarkable alien quality in that film? A singer and entertainer who always seemed slightly out of this world, Bowie played a humanoid alien who crashed to Earth in an effort to bring water back to his home planet, but the plot was secondary to Roeg’s craft and Bowie’s otherness.

While fans keep waiting for good news that the show will be miraculously revived, CBS just went ahead and ate fans’ metaphorical liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti – meaning they have picked up a show about Clarice Starling appropriately titled “Clarice.”

But what CBS All Access and Alex Kurtzman plan to do with the film “The Man Who Fell To Earth” is something a bit different. Sure, the studio and producer are taking the cult classic David Bowie film from 1976 and adapting it as a new TV series, but there’s a twist, as the entire premise is a getting a bit of retooling.

(Of course, next month brings Jordan Peele’s “The Twilight Zone” remake, so things are looking up for All Access.) And because of ‘Discovery’s’ popularity, showrunner and ‘Star Trek’ TV boss, Alex Kurtzman is readying the next streaming series in the franchise, which stars Patrick Stewart, returning to “Star Trek” after years and years away.

While he’s been attached to a variety of mega-blockbusters, including the revamped “Star Trek” film franchise and the “Transformers” franchise, none of his work has been particularly…great. There have been high points, but there have also been some serious lows, including “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” and the recent film “The Mummy,” in which he wrote and directed.

However, from the news today, it appears that CBS is really excited about Kurtzman’s direction for the series and might just let him expand the TV ‘Trek’ universe.

According to a report from THR, CBS has signed Alex Kurtzman to a new 5-year extension on his overall TV deal with the company.

The group has issued their nominations for the worst that 2017 had to offer, and everyone will argue about these entirely meaningless and pretty dumb awards anyway.

Certainly, you can’t debate their selections for Worst Picture: “Baywatch,” “The Emoji Movie,” “Fifty Shades Darker,” “The Mummy,” “Transformers: The Last Knight” (which earned the most nods with nine) were indeed all regrettable pictures.

Following the critical mauling and commercial flop of this summer’s “The Mummy,” the studio has been pretty quiet about their future plans. Ideas have floated around — Channing Tatum starring in “Van Helsing,” Gal Gadot leading “The Bride Of Frankenstein“ — but nothing has stuck.

It’s not bad for one of the worst reviewed blockbusters of the summer and of Cruise’s career, but, according to director Alex Kurtzman, the audiences are digging it and that’s all that matters.

Studios routinely reverse engineer their movies, announcing a release date first, often before a screenplay is finished let alone gone into production. This strategy keeps evolving, often for the worse. Now, studios carve out release dates for movies that don’t exist yet — mystery movies or ones they hope/intend to make.

The studio has announced that henceforth, their monster movie doings shall fall under the blandly named, Dark Universe banner.
