Did you ever think you’d live in a world where the names “Dune,” Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Taika Waititi all fit in the same sentence? Well, with the announcement of a film adaptation of “The Incal,” it’s happening.

According to publisher Humanoids, Taika Waititi is set to direct a film adaptation of the epic sci-fi graphic novel, “The Incal.” For those unaware, “The Incal” takes place in a dystopian sci-fi city and follows the story of private investigator John Difool, as he navigates a story that includes powerful crystals, aliens, and conspiracies.

ABKCO Films‘ “Alejandro Jodorowsky: 4K Restoration Collection” is a magnificent, grotesque sandwich. For the bread: “Fando y Lis” and “Psychomagic, A Healing Art.” For the fillings: “The Holy Mountain” and “El Topo.” Of this quartet, the latter pair of films is the most immediately recognizable, but the former pair of films is arguably more essential for understanding the Chilean master as both an artist and a human being, insomuch as Jodorowsky can be meaningfully “understood” the way that we understand the cinema of other celebrated auteurs.

“Dune” is a literary classic. The Frank Herbert novel is so widespread and iconic, the inspiration can be seen in some of the biggest film and TV franchises today. One of those men, obviously, is Alejandro Jodorowsky, who famously tried to adapt the project for a feature film in the ‘70s.

Starring the filmmaker’s son Adan Jodorowsky, Leandro Taub, Pamela Flores, and Felipe Rios, the film is a personally inspired tale of the director’s coming of age as an artist in 1940s Chile.

During his long and fascinating career, Jodorowsky has gifted us with ground-shaking midnight classics in “El Topo” and “The Holy Mountain,” but it’s his most recent predilection for finding out who he was as a young man that’s turned the director back to the camera after a 23-year hiatus.

American 1960s counterculture was a watershed for free speech and socio-politically charged expression from the younger generation. A plethora of movements would rise out of the period, giving voice to the oppressed and the disenfranchised while flipping off The Man as a direct reaction to the disastrous Vietnam War.

Just released to DVD are the films of Chilean-born, ’60s crackpot surrealist Alejandro Jodorowsky. An acid-soaked hodgepodge of unintentionally funny psychedelia, gratuitous blood, gratuitous nudity and lesbianism, wanton religious and militaristic iconography and other hippie-laden hilarious nonsense, the film, “El Topo,” became an instant cult-classic upon its release in 1970 (it’s ostensibly about a gunslinger on a “spiritual quest”).
