His reputation was so well-regarded, Nichols was actually the type of filmmaker that other established filmmakers would go to for advice. And as with a story told by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, sometimes that advice was downright terrifying and not what you want to hear just days before you start filming your biggest project to date.

We have seen this quite a bit over the past several weeks, after the festival debut of his most recent film, “Bardo.” When critics initially panned his film, he got very defensive and even talked about underlying racism in the reviews. Now, the filmmaker is opening up about why he isn’t pleased with the high-gloss modern cinema we see in 2022.

Speaking at an event in London (via Variety), filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu talked about his views on modern filmmaking.

One of the most anticipated features to debut is Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “Bardo.” The film marks the director’s first feature since 2015’s Oscar-winning “The Revenant” and many were curious how Iñárritu would return. Well, if the early reviews are any indication, “Bardo” might not be the Oscar contender that we have come to expect from Iñárritu.

He’s not the only one, naturally: comparisons to “8 ½” are par for the course whenever a filmmaker comes out with a notionally autobiographical work, as with Pedro Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory” in 2019.

Partly, this is because Venice has become a destination for studios who want to debut films that will likely become awards contenders, and partly, because Cannes and the streaming service can’t seem to figure out their differences. Though nothing is set in stone, just yet, it appears 2022 is shaping up to be another banner year for Netflix in Venice.

His appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast has been the gift that keeps giving. He discussed almost appearing as Batman in Zack Snyder’s “Batman Vs. Superman,” he essentially said “never say never” to Marvel if Thanos would ever come back, talked about his reappreciation for “The Goonies,” and more.

Directed by the singer herself, the video features photography from none other than Rodrigo Prieto, a frequent collaborator with Martin Scorsese, Alejandro González Iñárritu, as well as Ang Lee.

In that time, the US political system has turned into a complete shitshow and we’re now facing a global pandemic. Obviously, we’re not saying the lack of a new film from Iñárritu is the cause of these calamities. But yet, we’re not so sure it’s not. Regardless, it appears that there’s a new project from Iñárritu in the works and he’s bringing along one of the best cinematographers working today to help him make it happen.

Will theaters die? Should streaming services earn Oscars? But in the case of filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, he’s more concerned about how streaming services have affected which films get made, and thus, how audiences’ tastes have changed how stories are told in film.

While speaking at the Sarajevo Film Festival (via Variety), the “Birdman” director said that storytelling in film “needs much more contemplation, a little bit more patience, it needs to be a little bit more mysterious, more impenetrable, more poetic, more soulful.”

The director laments that quality storytelling has left the film industry in recent years as tentpole films dominate the marketplace and TV has attracted more viewers, with his fast-paced stories.

With back-to-back Best Director and Best Picture Oscar wins in 2015 and 2016, for “Birdman” and “The Revenant,” respectively, Iñárritu cemented his place among the very best the industry has to offer. So, when the filmmaker talks about the uncertain future of the industry, it’s probably important that everyone take notice.

Sure, celebarated American director Kelly Reichardt joked that this was her “first time not trying to get out of jury duty” and both she and Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwarcher hoped the day would soon come when they weren’t referred to as “women directors,” but it was mostly left jury president Alejandro González Iñárritu to carry the burden of the global media’s inquiries.

But this year I’ve tried to come to terms with my inability to bilocate, and to explore just a few of the other experiences the festival has to offer.

That seems to be the question surrounding the future of virtual reality. There are some who think the technology will be best applied in video games, while others think it’s only a matter of time until moviemakers embrace the format. Well, the only way for directors to tell will be to get their feet wet, and that’s just what Alejandro G. Iñárritu is doing.

Teaming up with his old pal and frequent collaborator, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (“Birdman,” “The Revenant“), Iñárritu will be directing a virtual reality short film that will explore the intense and excruciating experience of a group of immigrants and refugees crossing the border between Mexico and the United States.

So we thought we’d take this opportunity to attempt a more ambitious, wide-ranging week-long feature, and one that we’ve been batting around internally for a while now — our official and definitive and unimpeachably correct (!!) ranking of the 100 currently working filmmakers we’re most excited about.
